Yom Hazikaron Service Brings Importance Of Zionism To Forefront
The Jewish community of Winnipeg gathered at the Rady JCC on Tuesday Night for a memorial service that illustrated the eternal Jewish value of a safe homeland, and the price that has been paid to secure one.
The Yom Hazikaron ceremony, led by Rabbi Yosef Benarroch, was in tribute to "the righteous sons and daughters of Israel who gave their lives."
A siren, as heard in Israel when under attack, was sounded as the audience stood in dedicated memory of the sacrifice by 23,741 men and women in the Israeli Defence Force, and 3150 victims of terror attacks.
"In their blood we live, we can say never again; we must ensure the future of our nation; our duty is to be worthy of their sacrifice."
The audience nodded in agreement when they heard a cloud is over the heads of Israel and the Jewish people.
Antisemitism is at record highs in Europe, America and in Canada. Shootings at synagogues in Pittsburgh and Poway have Jews asking, "are we safe?"
Many of the event participants and people in attendance were IDF veterans.
Speakers mentioned their children who in some cases, are still on active service, as well as their own years of duty.
Representatives of the Royal Canadian Air Force 17 Wing based at the Canadian Forces Base Winnipeg, were in attendance in recognition of Canada's friendship and shared values with the State of Israel.
May the memory of those who sacrificed their lives in defence of Israel be forever enshrined in all of our hearts.
