Winnipeg Jewish Families Pack Celebration of Israel's Birthday
A spirit of pride and patriotism electrified the Rady Community Centre as the Yom Ha'Atzmaut activities rolled out Thursday, in recognition of the 71st anniversary of Israeli statehood.
A free family swim filled the pool with laughing and splashing children, and while other tween and family programming unfolded in the gym and multipurpose room, hungry celebrants decended on the special Israeli Cafe Menu.
The lineup to enter the gym for the main event of the Yom Ha'Atzmaut holiday was buzzing with excitement and optimism.
" Only last week, 700 rockets fell on our brethren in Israel. Today we stand strong and proud of Eretz Israel."
Culture and song filled the hall from the festive main stage, with a Beyachad group dance performance of Hava Nagila being followed by the Brock Corydon school grades 3 and 4 choir.
The emphasis on the children of the Jewish community continued, with the Shaarey Zedek synagogue Youth Choir, and Yona Youth choir contributing 2 numbers, respectively.
A traditional highlight of any local celebration of Israel was delivered in spades by the Sarah Sommer Chai Folk Ensemble, who brought their tremendous energy and musicianship to the fore.
Many of the most involved and dedicated members of the community were on hand once again volunteering at the kiosks and other key points of contact, and behind the scenes, in an impressive display of planning, organization, and execution.
Fireworks and freshly sliced birthday cake capped off a day where 2000 members of the Jewish community in Winnipeg loudly proclaimed, Am Israel Chai !
