Who Fears Expanding Legal Definitions Of Antisemitism? The Israel-haters Of IJV
The working definition of antisemitism, as set out by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, was incorporated into Florida legislation on May 31st. The Pro-Israel community is now going to watch with great interest as the far-left Marxists of Independent Jewish Voices Canada set their heads on fire trying to explain their opposition to legislation in Canada based on the IHRA document. because it is so bad for ... well, Jew-and-Israel haters.
Signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis days after announcing the legislation during a 4 day trade mission to Israel, Bill HB 741 added religion as a protected class when it comes to discrimination against students and employees.
Examples of conduct now considered antisemitic in Flordia include “making mendacious, dehumanizing, demonizing, or stereotypical allegations” about Jews” such as “the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy or of Jews controlling the media, economy, government or other societal institutions.”
The bill also defines antisemitism as “accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interest of their own nations.”
It criminalizes calls for violence against Jews, Holocaust denial, or the promotion of conspiracy theories targeting Jewish people.
DeSantis -- who identifies as “the most pro-Israel governor in America” -- said the measure sends “a strong statement about where Florida is.”
"Florida is the most Israel-friendly state in the country and we will not stand for discrimination against the Israeli people of any kind," DeSantis said in January. "BDS is nothing more than a cloak for anti-Semitism, and as long as I'm Governor, BDS will be DOA [dead on arrival]."
"Legislation prohibiting critical speech on Israel is spreading rapidly. Canada is on the brink of adopting this dangerous policy." IJV decared on Facebook. "On Monday IJV will unveil our campaign to stop the adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Association working definition of antisemitism."
“A public K-20 educational institution must treat discrimination by students or employees or resulting from institutional policies motivated by anti-Semitic intent in an identical manner to discrimination motivated by race.” says the bill.
It further categorized “focusing peace or human rights investigations only on Israel ... drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis ... blaming Israel for all interreligious or political tensions," or "requiring behavior of Israel that is not expected or demanded of any other democratic nation" as antisemitic.
This bill severely undercuts the foundation of propaganda put forward on campuses and elsewhere by organizations like Jewish Voices For Peace (the American cousin of IJV), who with other promoters of BDS support vile events like Israel Apartheid Week.
The Israeli Association of Manitoba has already begun discussions with local Jewish leadership to initiate the rollout of similar anti-BDS policies and legislation in our region.
It has been noted that recent anti-Jewish and anti-Israel marches like Nakba Day and the picket outside the Negev Gala in Winnipeg utilize tropes and language that would be criminal under the Florida model to battle antisemitism.
