How The Mainstream Media Emboldened Hamas’s Vengeful Hand

It’s a level of horror hard to imagine: hundreds of innocent Israelis raped, mutilated and wounded in cold blood, more than 150 taken hostage under the abominable threat of execution, and the unfathomable scene of butchered children – all at the maniacal hand of Gaza-based terrorist group, Hamas. In the immediate aftermath of the surprise and deeply sinister onslaught, which began on the brink of dawn last Saturday, Israel declared a state of war and launched retaliatory airstrikes targeting the terrorists on its border.
As the situation continues to spiral, with more lives lost by the day, one can’t help but dissect the chilling role the left-leaning, terrorist-sympathizing mainstream media (MSM) have played in recent years leading up to this wincing moment – essentially empowering Hamas to launch such a vicious onslaught and trigger an all-out war.
Since garnering an unprecedented level of support from officials during the Obama administration, Hamas, a U.S. designated terror group that violently won control of the embattled Gaza strip in 2007, came to understand the power of public relations and that winning over the foolish press was the most potent weapon in its Iran-supported stockpile. For the past decade, we’ve been bombarded with images of poverty in the Hamas-governed areas and wailing stories painting Israel as the villain against much poorer victims on the other side of a “dehumanizing” fence. Never mind that Hamas (a group that calls for the complete decimation of the state of Israel and the Jewish people) dehumanizes itself via notoriously using human shields, disguising themselves as civilians, and indiscriminately launching rockets without regard for Israeli noncombatants – all war crimes whitewashed by the press.
In 2018, former Associated Press reporter based in Jerusalem, Matti Friedman, broke precedent and acknowledged in an op-ed that editors omitted Hamas’s manipulation of events and complied with Hamas censorship orders under the guise of “protecting” journalists from their harm.
“The press could be trusted to present dead human beings not as victims of the terrorist group that controls their lives, or of a tragic confluence of events, but of an unwarranted Israeli slaughter,” he wrote. “The willingness of reporters to cooperate with that script gave Hamas the incentive to keep using it.”
Friedman also highlighted that stories of Israeli peace offerings – rejected by the Palestinians – were downplayed or languished without much fanfare in favor of more anger-inciting stories surrounding Israel’s settlements in the West Bank or the IDF’s response to a threat.
“Any reporter from the international press corps in Israel, whether he or she works for the AP, Reuters, CNN, the BBC, or elsewhere, will recognize the examples I’ve cited here of what is newsworthy and what is not as standard operating procedure,” he added. “I saw, from the inside, how Israel’s flaws were dissected and magnified while the flaws of its enemies were purposely erased. I saw how the threats facing Israel were disregarded or even mocked as figments of the Israeli imagination, even as these threats repeatedly materialized.”
Such ideologically driven bias has been further amplified by the media wing of the United Nations over decades, with headlines screaming about the “Hell on Earth” that Gazans endure while failing to mention that psychological suffering or injuries inflicted on innocents in Israel’s terrain.
In addition to glossing over the crimes of a foreign terrorist organization, much of the media has also remained complicit in blaming Israel for the brutal actions of Hamas with language signifying that Israel “unfairly” dares to protect itself or fight back against the aggressors and carefully discarding important details from its reports. For one, last month, the Associated Press blasted out an article with the headline “A Palestinian dies a month after being shot during an Israeli raid in the West Bank,” while failing to note that this Palestinian was a fighter for a terrorist group in Gaza until well into the misleading article.
Sadly, the Western media machine has morphed into Palestinian activists rather than level-headed, fact-based journalists in recent decades. And as we see from last weekend’s gruesome events, this has dangerous consequences.
Americans have been led to believe from afar that Israel could declare peace and knock down its walls tomorrow if it so desired, an absolutely false narrative. If such attacks as last weekend could happen with a wall, imagine what would happen without one. The IDF is left with the constant conundrum of choosing the best of the worst choices each time, and despite cautioning civilians off with rubber bullets and tear gas and warnings of a strike, Hamas is given free media rein to bomb wherever it desires with impunity.
Adding to the irony is that the leftist press, which purports to raise the flag for women and the LGBTQ+ community, conveniently ignores the notion that for the last fifteen years under Hamas rule, Gaza has functioned as a one-party state with next to no media freedom, does little to assist marginalized groups, excludes women from leadership roles and bans same-sex relationships – punishable by death.
And while the shock and awe of last Saturday’s terrorist onslaught was horrible enough for most media outlets to dare illuminate Israel’s suffering, it seems some of the old voices and tactics are creeping back in. For example, Jacobin states that the “violence was not unprovoked,” while United Press International (UPI) ’s headline “Israel kills 413 Palestinians over Hamas offensive; Palestine criticizes West’s ‘double standards,’” replete with bleeding-heart references to Palestinian casualties in Gaza from Israeli counterstrikes and suggests that “some Israelis are flying home to fight against Palestinians,” making it appear an act of antagonism rather than an effort to protect one’s homeland from terrorists. And CNN hasn’t wasted time spotlighting the “humanitarian crisis” in Gaza as a result not of their leaders’ own doing, but of course, Israeli reprisal.

Naturally, the MSM also sought to blame conservatives for “stoking fears” of a possible Hamas attack on the U.S., rather than addressing the anxieties of many and admitting that nothing is off the cards with these merciless animals.
But Americans are smart, and Americans are taking note. For one, the far-left MSNBC continued with its shameful coverage this past week, with host Andrea Mitchell daring to ask an Israeli mother of two children taken hostage by the barbarians how she felt about Israel’s retaliatory bombing of Gaza.
“You’re looking for a symmetrical situation. I can’t be sympathetic to animal human beings — well, they’re not really human beings — who came into my house, broke everything, stole everything, took my children from their bedrooms and took them to the Gaza Strip,” the mother shot back. “Israel has never done that, and it will never do. So, there is no symmetry!”
It is no wonder MSNBC’s ratings are down 33 percent in primetime this week.
Unlike Hamas-governed Gaza, Israel bestows complete freedom of the press; thus, reporters can cover the situation however they like, and Israel has many more important things to worry about than playing the PR game. But when so-called journalists and media experts whitewash the ethnic cleansing goals of a terrorist organization or even suggest some moral equivalence, evil is only incentivized and emboldened. And as we have all seen over the past week, this propping up of genocidal maniacs comes with a painful price.
The media can – and must – do better.
