As the first day of school approached for millions of children in Israel, a survey conducted by Geocartography Knowledge Group on behalf of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews (IFCJ) revealed concerning insights about the financial challenges faced by parents in providing their children with essential education supplies. The study found that nearly 60 percent of parents believe the rising cost of living is directly impacting their ability to afford suitable education for their kids. Furthermore, a quarter of Israeli families are struggling to cover the expenses of basic school supplies and clothing.
In response to this growing need, IFCJ Canada stepped in to provide assistance. The organization distributed more than 600 backpacks filled with basic school supplies and 8,200 clothing cards to underprivileged children. These beneficiaries include children aged 6-12 from families registered with Israel’s Department of Welfare and Social Services, as well as those up to 18 years old residing in government boarding schools or coming from families affected by domestic abuse.
Yael Eckstein, President of IFCJ Canada, emphasized the importance of such initiatives, saying, “For many children and parents, the first day of school is filled with the excitement of new school bags filled with fresh supplies and brand new school clothing. But thousands of Israeli families can’t afford even the most basic necessities. With the rising cost of living driving sharp growth among families with school-age children, this project is a necessary response to make sure kids have the tools they need to thrive and succeed in school while also alleviating some financial strain at home.”
The survey, conducted in July 2023, included 450 parents with school-age children from both Jewish and Arab sectors. Researchers found a clear correlation between rising consumer prices and the increasing number of families struggling to purchase even the most fundamental goods required for their children’s education.
Notably, 67 percent of respondents stated that the cost of basic goods forced them to curtail their spending ahead of the new school year, with two-thirds indicating that they also had to cut back on child-related expenses. These concerns were raised by parents from various financial backgrounds, including 83 percent of those with monthly incomes below the national average.
Even higher-income families faced similar challenges. The study revealed that 51 percent of parents earning above the national average income and 69 percent of average earners reported the need to reduce expenses related to school supplies, fearing the potential impact on their children’s education.

Karyna, mother of 7-year-old Daria, was very moved by the provision of a backpack and school supplies for her daughter. “You made my girl happy!” she said. “We arrived [to Israel] with very few things and she didn’t have a schoolbag. The school year starts soon and we are in a new country and a new city, so I don’t even know where to start looking for a schoolbag for her. Now I have one less worry in my heart. I see how happy she is. Thank you to IFCJ Canada for helping our family.”
