On September 16, marking one year since the tragic death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini at the hands of Iranian “morality police,” the band Iraqis in Pajamas is set to release their powerful single, “#MahsaAmini.” This song serves as a poignant tribute to Mahsa Amini and draws attention to the ongoing human rights violations in Iran.
Fronted by Loolwa Khazzoom, Iraqis in Pajamas is known for its unique blend of ancient Iraqi Jewish prayers, alternative rock, and personal storytelling. Their music transcends boundaries, tackling sensitive topics such as cancer, domestic violence, racism, mental illness, and more.
Khazzoom, deeply affected by the tragic incident involving Mahsa Amini, swiftly responded to the call for justice. She learned about Mahsa’s murder through TikTok videos posted by Iranian women, who pleaded, “Be our voice.” Khazzoom took immediate action, leveraging her platform to share social media content on the issue, reaching out to her government officials, initiating a fundraising campaign for United for Iran (a supporter of Iranian protestors), and penning a moving poem titled “#MahsaAmini.” This poem eventually evolved into the band’s latest single.
The song narrates the heart-wrenching story of Mahsa Amini’s murder and then draws connections between the enforced wearing of the hijab and the broader global issue of violence against women. In the chorus, Khazzoom passionately implores, “Say her name with me,” and goes on to speak the names of other Iranian protestors who have suffered torture or lost their lives in the year following Amini’s tragic death.
For Khazzoom, the song holds a deeply personal significance. Her own experiences with sexual violence, rooted in the obsession of Middle Eastern men with women’s hair, and her inheritance of her grandmother’s abaya (a full body covering required for women in Iraq by Muslim law) give her a unique perspective on the struggles faced by women.
“#MahsaAmini” is not just a song; it’s a call for justice, a tribute to a life cut short, and a stark reminder of the ongoing human rights issues in Iran. It serves as a testament to the power of music as a vehicle for change and a tool for raising awareness.

We have exposed the distorted hateful agenda of the “progressive” left political radicals who brought Linda Sarsour to our cities, and we were first to report on many disturbing incidents of Nazi-based hate towards Jews across Canada.
