“For me and my fellow Jewish students, Israel-hating rhetoric and Jewish-hating rhetoric feels the same because they are the same: Both are anti-Semitism,” said Joey Karlan, Club Z alumnus.

Muslim Association of Canada Annual Convention

In early September, the Muslim Association of Canada (MAC) will hold its annual convention in downtown Toronto at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC).
The MAC is a charitable organization that describes itself as one of the country’s largest Muslim organizations, with dozens of community centres, schools under its umbrella, and which claims to serve 55,000 community members weekly across Canada.
According to its website, MAC “is a positive force for change in our society by promoting engagement of Muslims within the wider society, building bridges and cooperating with other communities and organizations,” and that it strives to communicate “our understanding of Islam as a moderate, balanced, and constructive way of life…”
However, at its upcoming annual convention, one featured speaker has a long history of spreading messaging that is anything but moderate and balanced.
Sheikh Nashaat Ahmed, an Islamic scholar based in Qatar of Egyptian decent, has a long history of spouting what we consider extreme vitriolic antisemitism and hatred towards other groups.
One video, uploaded to YouTube on June 1, 2023 (watch at: 01:18:54-01:19:10), features Ahmed leading an Arabic-language prayer, where he calls on God to “destroy [take revenge against] the Jews and those loyal to them and support them.”
He continues his prayer by saying “O Allah, destroy [take revenge against] the Russians and the Hindus, destroy the Shiites and the Communists, destroy [take revenge against[ everyone who assaulted Muslims. O Lord, Count their number; slay them one by one and spare not one of them.”
HonestReporting Canada has independently verified the translation of Ahmed’s words from the original Arabic. Additionally, we communicated our concerns directly to the MAC, which did not respond to our request for comment.
In our view, Ahmed’s hateful rhetoric isn’t a new phenomenon; he has been spreading such contempt for many years.
In 2018, (watch at: 55:20-55:23), he asked Allah to “give us victory over the disbelieving people.”
In many of Ahmed’s lectures, he didn’t leave his targets unnamed; he was happy to specify who he had in mind.

In 2016, he described (watch at: 06:37-06:55) “the Jews” as “the worst of living creatures/the worst of all beings” and called on Allah (watch at: 58:54-58:57) to “Destroy our enemy and Your enemy. Destroy the Jews and whom they ally with… (watch at: 59:34-59:38) count their number, slay them one by one and spare not one of them.” In another sermon (watch at: 11:19-11:22), he called Jews “the descendants of pigs and apes”.
Only days earlier (watch at: 57:45-57:53), he beseeched Allah to “Destroy the Jews, the Christians, the Americans, the Russians, the Iranians, destroy the rest of oppressors and the criminals.”
Despite Ahmed’s longstanding history of spewing what we view as repugnant hatred, his upcoming speaking engagement at the MAC annual convention is not his only time lecturing in Canada.
In May 2023, Ahmed spoke at the Al-Salam Centre in Calgary, where he was also listed as having lectured three months prior, and also in October 2022. He is a frequent speaker at Dar Foundation mosque in Oakville, ON.
In 2019, Ahmed had a busy schedule, participating in more than a dozen engagements over the course of a week in Alberta and in December 2016, he was invited to speak at Dar Al-Tawheed Islamic Centre in Mississauga.

In our view, Sheikh Nashaat Ahmed’s long track record of spreading what we regard as extremist hatred should immediately disqualify him for any public speaking engagement anywhere in Canada. Furthermore, the Muslim Association of Canada, in our estimation, should reconsider hosting a speaker with an extensive history of spreading what we consider hateful antisemitism.
The MAC has also been the subject of a years-long audit by Canada Revenue Agency (CRA)’s Review and Analysis Division, which has the responsibility of ensuring that charitable organizations do not violate Canada’s Anti-Terrorism Act. A summarized response by the MAC to the CRA’s audit can be seen here.
Accordingly, the Canadian news media has a duty and a responsibility to shine a critical light on
the Muslim Association of Canada (MAC) for hosting Sheikh Nashaat Ahmed at its upcoming annual convention, with demands that he shouldn’t be given a platform to spread his invective on Canadian soil.
