As residents of Efrat for the past 38 years, my family and I have witnessed the ebb and flow of life in this quiet town. Our roots run deep here, as we’ve raised six children who have now become adults, with a combined total of 12 children of their own. But this week, terror hit shockingly close to home – an incident that exposed the chilling nexus between incitement, incentive, and inaction.

The victim of this horrifying attack was Bat Sheva Nigri, a woman who held a connection even closer than we could have imagined. She had been a nursery school teacher alongside our daughter, Leora. Bat Sheva’s tragic fate unfolded as she was targeted and murdered in a drive-by shooting by Arab assailants. But what followed was an even more disheartening revelation – the sickening glorification of her murder by Al Aksa TV, an outlet affiliated with Hamas.

It was chilling to witness an interview on Al Aksa TV with a Palestinian Arab leader, praising the act of murder and even tying it to the anniversary of the 1969 arson of the Al Aksa Mosque. This instance of clear incitement showed how media can be exploited to fuel hatred and perpetuate violence.

Within hours, the shooters behind this heinous crime were captured. Astonishingly, they readily admitted their involvement in Bat Sheva’s murder. And why wouldn’t they? The Palestinian Authority’s 2015 statute promises a lifetime salary to anyone who kills a Jew. This despicable policy creates a grim reality where taking innocent lives is financially incentivized.

Upon learning of this deeply disturbing fact, I couldn’t help but take action. I reached out to the media office of the Prime Minister of Israel, questioning whether the government would demand the Palestinian Authority cease payments to murderers and repeal their odious law of incentivized violence. However, the response from the Prime Minister’s office was silence, leaving the incentive for murder law untouched.

Prime Minister Netanyahu’s condolence visit to Bat Sheva Nigri’s family, while a gesture of empathy, took a geopolitical turn as he held Iran responsible for her murder. Meanwhile, the IDF spokesman informed me that no action would be taken against Al Aksa TV, even though the IDF had previously bombed the network in 2021 due to its history of incitement. The spokesman shockingly failed to draw any connections between Al Aksa TV and Iran, further emphasizing the disjointed approach to this issue.

The disturbing truth becomes clear – what we have here is, in essence, a perfect crime. Those responsible for Bat Sheva Nigri’s death will be financially rewarded, and the world watches in silence. The Palestinian Authority’s reprehensible law remains in place, incentivizing further violence.

It’s a heart-wrenching lesson in the interplay between words, actions, and consequences. This incident isn’t just a personal tragedy; it’s a symptom of a systemic problem that needs to be addressed. While we mourn Bat Sheva Nigri’s loss, we must also confront the broader issues of incitement and incentive that enable such horrors to persist. Without collective action, the cycle will only continue, and the perfect crime will persist.
