Leora Kronenberg from Toronto and Noa De Louya from Montreal are among 28 college undergraduates participating in the 12th annual Summer Science Research Internship Program. This joint initiative between Bar-Ilan University (BIU) and Yeshiva University (YU) offers students a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in cutting-edge scientific research under the mentorship of Israel’s leading scientists.
In this program, students like Leora Kronenberg engage in hands-on research in emerging scientific fields, gaining valuable experience and insights that enhance their academic journey. Kronenberg has been working closely with Prof. Jordan Chill’s research group in the Department of Chemistry. The focus of her research lies in unraveling the intricate connection between protein structure, dynamics, and their roles in biological systems’ functioning, especially in health and disease contexts. Kronenberg’s work involves understanding how WASp Interacting Protein (WIP), a pivotal protein with multiple cellular interactions, engages with its binding partners. Utilizing nuclear magnetic resonance techniques, Kronenberg introduced a unique label, a 19F nucleus, into WIP. This groundbreaking approach lays the foundation for in-depth studies to better comprehend WIP’s behavior in vitro and within cells. Prof. Chill commended Kronenberg’s successful integration of an unconventional DNA codon into WIP’s expression sequence, opening new avenues of research.
Reflecting on her experience, Kronenberg expressed enthusiasm for the program’s balance between learning and social engagement. She highlighted the privilege of working with Prof. Chill and Dr. Sher, gaining insights into research techniques and the life of a researcher. The BIU-YU program provided Kronenberg with a perfect blend of professional and personal growth in an enriching atmosphere.
Noa De Louya, from the Moroccan community in Montreal, has also found this program to exceed her expectations. Engaged in Prof. Benny Motro’s lab at the Goodman Faculty of Life Sciences, De Louya’s research focuses on the multifaceted functions of the Codanin-1 gene. This gene’s mutation leads to a rare disease called Congenital Dyserythropoietic Anemia type 1. De Louya’s work seeks to unveil the gene’s role in DNA damage repair, its interaction with surrounding proteins, and its phenotypic effects in mice. By comprehending Codanin-1’s overall function, researchers aim to illuminate various biological processes.
De Louya appreciated how the program rejuvenated her passion for her field of study. It reminded her of the real-world application of her academic endeavors and the impact she could make. She praised the mentorship of Prof. Motro and the program’s collaborative environment, facilitating interdisciplinary discussions and learning.

The Summer Science Research Internship Program, funded by the late Dr. Mordecai Katz, Dr. Monique Katz, the Irving I. Stone Foundation, and the Zoltan Erenyi Fund, brings together students from various institutions, including Yeshiva College, Barnard, Harvard University, Cornell University, Princeton University, Queens College, and more. Over seven weeks, students collaborate with BIU’s STEM research faculty in various disciplines, fostering personal and professional growth.
Directed by Prof. Arlene Wilson-Gordon of Bar-Ilan’s Department of Chemistry, the program emphasizes individualized research assignments that complement each student’s growth trajectory. In addition to research, the program includes visits to notable institutions, lectures, and enriching cultural experiences, creating a holistic educational environment.
The BIU-YU Summer Science Program is a testament to Bar-Ilan’s commitment to international collaboration and advancing scientific research. As the program continues to cultivate young minds and drive innovation, the future of scientific exploration looks promising.

Our positioning as a Zionist News Media platform sets us apart from the rest. While other Canadian Jewish media are advocating increasingly biased progressive political and social agendas, TheJ.Ca is providing more and more readers with a welcome alternative and an ideological home.
We revealed the incursion of anti-Israel progressive elements such as IfNotNow into our communities. We have exposed the distorted hateful agenda of the “progressive” left political radicals who brought Linda Sarsour to our cities, and we were first to report on many disturbing incidents of Nazi-based hate towards Jews across Canada.
