The Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) report published on Wednesday highlights a concerning trend: the surge of antisemitism, particularly in the form of anti-Zionism, within the political left. This alarming rise is causing experts to consider European experiences as a potential “bellwether” for the U.S. Jewish community. While instances of left-wing antisemitism might be less violent compared to their right-wing counterparts, the infiltration of these sentiments into mainstream political discourse raises both political and physical concerns, as noted by the ADL report.
The report underscores how anti-Jewish sentiments and incidents in Europe can serve as indicators for future challenges faced by the U.S. Jewish community. Notably, recent instances of violent antisemitism in the United States, reminiscent of those that have plagued European Jewish communities, and the growth of anti-Zionism within U.S. progressive circles, a phenomenon long established in Europe, are compelling reasons to take heed.
Lessons can be drawn from the European experience, particularly in addressing anti-Israel trends and anti-Zionism, which often blur the lines between attacks on Israel and attacks on Jews and Jewish identity. The rise of anti-Zionist rhetoric and terminology within European left-wing circles has found its way into U.S. political discourse, signaling an interconnectedness that cannot be ignored.
One pivotal example of this interconnectedness is the May 2021 Israel-Hamas conflict. The tensions between Israel and Palestine resulted in incidents of antisemitism targeted at Jews and Jewish institutions in the U.S., mirroring patterns observed during prior Israeli-Palestinian conflicts in Europe. The ADL noted a staggering 115 percent increase in antisemitic incidents across the U.S. during May 2021 compared to the same period in the previous year.
The report emphasizes that the U.S. should closely observe European experiences of left-wing antisemitism and consider potential consequences. In Germany, the use of pro-intifada language has infiltrated social justice circles in the U.S., while the antisemitic notion of Jewish or pro-Israel lobby control over government actions, common in the UK and France, has also gained traction within American discourse.
Furthermore, the adoption of Soviet-era tactics in the U.S., akin to those in France, has sought to brand Israel as an extension of colonialism, utilizing the label of Zionism as racism. This language, used by anti-Israel NGOs and activist groups, attempts to delegitimize the Zionist movement by negating Jewish claims to Israel.

To address these rising trends, the ADL outlines several policy recommendations. These include robust condemnation of antisemitism, opposing hate and extremism driven by antisemitism, ensuring institutions are safe from antisemitism, tackling online antisemitism, and acting against antisemitism on a global scale. Additionally, teaching about antisemitism and promoting understanding of Jewish people is vital to preventing history from repeating itself.
The European experience serves as a cautionary tale for the U.S. and Canadian Jewish communities, highlighting the importance of monitoring and combating antisemitic sentiments, especially within political left circles. Learning from these experiences can help prevent the spread of dangerous trends and safeguard against the mainstreaming of antisemitism in politics and society.
