McGill University’s Dr. Danielle Karo-Atar has joined Ben-Gurion University of the Negev’s (BGU) Faculty of Health Sciences as part of the 2023-2024 academic year cohort of the prestigious Zuckerman STEM Leadership Program.
The initiative supports future generations of leaders in science, technology, engineering, and math in the U.S. and Israel while fostering greater collaboration between the world’s most advanced scientific research centers.
For her postdoctoral studies at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC) in Montreal, Dr. Karo-Atar researched aspects of disease tolerance during infection of the intestinal epithelium by enteric helminths, a unique example of an invasive yet tolerable group of parasites. These parasitic infections can last from weeks to years and involve multiple host tissues, yet mortality rates remain low, suggesting mechanisms aimed at maintaining tissue resilience.
Now, in the Department of Pharmacology and Clinical Biochemistry at BGU’s Faculty of Health Sciences, Dr. Karo-Atar heads the ImmunoParasitology Lab — which investigates how host fitness is maintained during chronic insults to the gut. Dr. Karo-Atar and her team hope to reveal novel parasite-regulated host epithelial pathways and identify new mechanisms of disease tolerance that contribute to intestinal resilience.
“By adding her expertise in disease tolerance to the wide array of breakthrough research conducted at Ben-Gurion University, Dr. Karo-Atar joins a faculty that drives the vision of David Ben-Gurion by developing scalable solutions from the Negev that effect positive change for all of humanity. We are honored to rally Americans around the University’s game-changing global impact,” Doug Seserman, CEO of Americans for Ben-Gurion University (A4BGU).

Dr. Karo-Atar is one of seven newly announced Zuckerman Faculty Scholars — scientists from North American institutions who return to their native Israel to launch state-of-the-art laboratories at Israeli universities. The labs are jointly funded by the Zuckerman STEM Leadership Program, Israel’s Council for Higher Education, and each host university.
“We are proud to welcome the 2023 cohort to our lifelong community of Zuckerman Scholars,” said Zuckerman Institute Executive Director in Israel, Lina Deshilton.
“We thank the Israel’s Council for Higher Education for the continuing strategic partnership that began in 2018, which continues to strengthen Israeli academia and recruiting North American postdocs to Israel.”

Thank you for choosing TheJ.Ca as your source for Canadian Jewish News.
We do news differently!
Our positioning as a Zionist News Media platform sets us apart from the rest. While other Canadian Jewish media are advocating increasingly biased progressive political and social agendas, TheJ.Ca is providing more and more readers with a welcome alternative and an ideological home.
We revealed the incursion of anti-Israel progressive elements such as IfNotNow into our communities. We have exposed the distorted hateful agenda of the “progressive” left political radicals who brought Linda Sarsour to our cities, and we were first to report on many disturbing incidents of Nazi-based hate towards Jews across Canada.
But we can’t do it alone. We need your HELP!
Our ability to thrive and grow in 2020 and beyond depends on the generosity of committed readers and supporters like you.
Monthly support is a great way to help us sustain our operations. We greatly appreciate any contributions you can make to support Jewish Journalism.
