The album “The Wolf and the Lamb” by Yale Strom & Hot Pstromi takes listeners on a captivating musical journey that blends klezmer traditions with a curious exploration of historical compositions, poems, and folk songs from the past. Rooted in klezmer, the band’s inherent musical and societal curiosity shines through, unearthing surprising connections to various cultures and eras.
Elements from Ukrainian, Livonian, Belarusian, and Romani influences seamlessly meld with klezmer sounds, creating a harmonious blend that transcends time and resonates deeply with its audience. Themes of tradition versus exploration find expression throughout the album, reflecting the band’s approach to music that respects its roots while embracing modern innovation.
The title track, “The Wolf and the Lamb,” draws inspiration from an old Yiddish poem believed to have been sung as a lullaby. It recounts the tales of Jewish communities in the Burgenland region of Austria. Band leader Yale Strom composed the melody in an impressionistic classical style, adding authentic Yiddish vocals to evoke specific moods and emotions. The song serves as a musical embodiment of the album’s central concepts and motifs, showcasing the seamless integration of cultural history into contemporary music.
The instrumental ensemble on the album features classic klezmer staples like the accordion, violin, and clarinet. In addition to these traditional instruments, the band incorporates the flute, fife, contrabass, piccolo, sopranino, and tenor saxophone, infusing regional influences and hints of jazz. The result is a listening experience that traverses a spectrum of emotions, from uplifting and energizing to pensive and contemplative.
Yale Strom, a violinist, composer, and eminent ethnographer-artist of klezmer music and history, plays a pivotal role in forming Hot Pstromi’s repertoire. His extensive ethnographic research in Eastern Europe has deeply influenced the band’s musical choices and exploration of Jewish heritage.
Founded in 1981 and comprising internationally renowned virtuosos, Hot Pstromi has enchanted klezmer enthusiasts across the globe for over four decades.
