Social media’s ability to reach out to and connect with a global audience has provided a new platform for storytellers. One such narrative curator harnessing this power is Adil Faouzi, an English education graduate from Morocco, whose Instagram page ‘Murakuc’ is enlightening audiences about a lesser-known aspect of Moroccan heritage – its rich Jewish history and how it intertwines with the cultural, social, and economic fabric of the nation.

Inspiration for this unique endeavor stems from Adil’s father’s enchanting tales of Morocco’s historical landscape, woven with Jewish and Amazigh traditions. Spurred by these untold narratives of Moroccan resistance during the French protectorate era and the desire to educate others about Morocco’s multicultural essence, Adil embarked on his Murakuc journey. The page, established on February 14, 2021, is a Valentine’s Day tribute to his love for Morocco. The name ‘Murakuc’ resonates with an Amazigh term for Morocco and mirrors the ancient moniker for Marrakech.

Adil’s project focuses primarily on the transformative period of 1900 to 2000 in Morocco – a century that witnessed resistance, independence, cultural evolution, and significant societal changes. It was a time when Morocco navigated its path through significant shifts while staying true to its diverse roots. The over 2500 photographs and videos featured on Murakuc offer a visual exploration of this era, connecting followers with poignant moments that shaped Morocco’s history.

The process of selecting these visuals is far from haphazard. Adil delves deep into the historical context behind each image, ensuring they tell a tale, reflect a moment of significance, or depict an unusual facet of Moroccan life. Some of these images come from his personal collection, treasured artifacts passed down through generations. Other pictures are generously contributed by followers or sourced from international platforms like GettyImages, Alamy Images, the French Diplomatic Archive, and the Israel National Library archives. The diversity and richness of these sources allow Adil to consistently enrich the narrative of Moroccan history on his page.

Prominently featured among these visuals are images showcasing the longstanding Jewish influence on Moroccan culture and society. Jews have lived in Morocco for over 2000 years, significantly contributing to the nation’s economic, social, and cultural facets. Their impact echoes in the spheres of trade, craftsmanship, music, language, and cuisine. The recognition of this influence in Morocco’s 2011 constitution was a groundbreaking moment, acknowledging the Hebraic component as an essential part of Moroccan identity.

The Jewish imprint on Moroccan art is apparent and celebrated. Jewish musicians have played a substantial role in evolving traditional Moroccan music genres, like Andalusian classical music and Chaabi. Moroccan architecture, particularly in the Jewish quarters or Mellahs, exhibits a beautiful blend of Islamic and Jewish styles. The finesse of Jewish goldsmiths and silversmiths have significantly shaped Moroccan jewelry design, leading to a unique blend appreciated worldwide.

The core message of Murakuc is unity, coexistence, and an appreciation of the shared heritage that binds different communities together. Adil believes that understanding our past, acknowledging the diverse elements that constitute our culture, and appreciating the intertwined history of the Jewish and Muslim communities, can strengthen national unity, respect, and mutual understanding. By highlighting these interconnected threads of shared history and identity, he aspires to instill pride in Morocco’s diverse heritage.

While Instagram has been instrumental in reaching out to a wide audience, Adil envisions a broader scope for his project. He is open to collaborations with cultural institutions, libraries, and museums for exhibitions. Such collaborations would provide a more immersive experience to audiences, allow a larger population to connect with Moroccan heritage, and evoke insightful conversations about Morocco’s diverse and vibrant culture.

Adil’s Murakuc project is a testament to the power of social media in shedding light on little-known historical aspects and fostering a sense of unity among diverse cultures. It illuminates the shared Moroccan Jewish-Muslim heritage, contributing significantly to our understanding of Morocco’s cultural landscape.

As we move forward in an increasingly globalized world, such efforts to acknowledge, preserve, and share our rich multicultural past become ever more critical. Through the lens of Instagram, Adil is doing just that – preserving the past, promoting unity, and paving the way for a future that is respectful of and enriched by its diverse heritage.

Our positioning as a Zionist News Media platform sets us apart from the rest. While other Canadian Jewish media are advocating increasingly biased progressive political and social agendas, TheJ.Ca is providing more and more readers with a welcome alternative and an ideological home.

We revealed the incursion of anti-Israel progressive elements such as IfNotNow into our communities. We have exposed the distorted hateful agenda of the “progressive” left political radicals who brought Linda Sarsour to our cities, and we were first to report on many disturbing incidents of Nazi-based hate towards Jews across Canada.
