A recent poll conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR) sheds light on the varied sentiments among Palestinians regarding Islamist groups and key events in Palestinian history.

The survey reveals that a plurality of Palestinians view the formation of terrorist organizations Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad as the most positive development since the Nakba—the establishment of the modern State of Israel. However, opinions are divided when it comes to the role of Fatah, with a majority expressing a desire for the resignation of Fatah and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

According to the survey, 24% of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza Strip believe that the creation of Hamas and Islamic Jihad, along with their acts of violence against Israel, has been the most beneficial outcome since the Nakba. When broken down by location, 16% of West Bank residents hold this view, while 38% of Gazans share the sentiment. In second place, 21% of respondents (24% in the West Bank and 16% in Gaza) consider the First and Second Intifadas as the most positive events for the Palestinian people since the Nakba.

Interestingly, only 9% of Palestinians perceive the establishment of Fatah as the most significant development for their people. Furthermore, a staggering 80% of those surveyed expressed a desire for Fatah and its chairman, Mahmoud Abbas, to resign from their positions within the Palestinian Authority.

When asked about the most effective means of ending the Israeli occupation and achieving an independent Palestinian state, 52% of respondents (55% in Gaza and 49% in the West Bank) chose “armed struggle.” This figure represents a slight decrease of 2 percentage points from the previous survey. Additionally, 21% voiced support for negotiations, while 22% opted for “popular resistance” as the preferred approach.

The poll, which surveyed 1,270 Palestinians face-to-face in 127 randomly selected locations between June 7 and 11, has a margin of error of 3%. Notably, the survey was conducted after Israel celebrated its 75th year of independence.

A significant finding from the survey is that two-thirds (66%) of Palestinians do not believe that Israel will survive to celebrate its 100th anniversary. Meanwhile, when asked about the possibility of regaining Palestine and repatriating refugees, a narrow majority of 51% responded affirmatively.

Regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, support for a two-state solution stands at 28%, while a considerable 70% of respondents expressed opposition to the idea.

These poll results highlight the diverse perspectives within the Palestinian population, with varying views on Islamist groups, armed struggle, negotiations, and the future of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The findings demonstrate the complexity of the Palestinian narrative and underscore the challenges faced in seeking a unified approach to address the aspirations and concerns of the Palestinian people.
