An amazing grassroots initiative that started a few months ago has taken the Jewish community by storm, as Jewish girls from the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) come together to form hockey teams. It all began with a simple email sent out by a couple of parents, who envisioned a team that could potentially compete in the upcoming Maccabiah Games. Little did they know that their effort would bring together 105 talented Jewish girls, leading to the formation of three teams under the name “the JCC Warriors.”
This month, the JCC Warriors made their mark by participating in a tournament held in Niagara Falls. As the tournament concluded, an email from one of the organizers, Neil Grunberg, captured the magical experience and highlighted the incredible moments that unfolded throughout the event.
The top 10 moments of the tournament showcased the spirit and camaraderie that permeated the JCC Warriors’ journey. From a Friday night tailgate Chinese food Shabbat dinner to the unwavering support of the players for each other, the bond between the girls extended beyond the ice.
The U15s and U18s were so inspired by their experience that they requested to make their teams permanent, transcending their home organizations for this season. The pride the Jewish girls felt in representing their community was evident, with plans even being discussed for a group Bat Mitzvah to celebrate their unity.
Siblings of the players across various teams added to the supportive atmosphere, despite the exhaustion it may have caused their parents. The coaching staff’s dedication was also highlighted, going above and beyond to ensure each girl felt connected and valued, regardless of the outcome of the games.
The tournament was not just about the games; it was a testament to lifelong friendships and the power of shared experiences. Two best friends, both grandmothers of players on the U15 team, had the chance to witness their granddaughters play together for the first time. The event even served as an excuse for the friends to have a girls’ trip to Niagara, cheering on Oliviah and Noa L. from the stands.
Beyond the tournament, the impact of the JCC Warriors resonates deeply. The girls, despite playing for different teams at different levels and age groups, have formed an unbreakable bond that extends beyond the ice rink. Whether they meet at future arenas, they will recognize the special connection they share, marked by hugs, high fives, and nods of acknowledgement.

The success of the JCC Warriors would not have been possible without the incredible support of dedicated parents who contributed their time and efforts behind the scenes. From assisting behind the bench to organizing meals, booking venues, and recruiting players, their contributions were instrumental in making this initiative a resounding success.
This weekend can be best described as a combination of a hockey tournament and an overnight camp, where moments of unity and camaraderie were palpable. The sight of the U18s joyfully chanting “GOLDIE” on their way back from ice cream or the U13s cheering on the U18s in their final, cheering every girl by name, highlighted the genuine friendships and support among the players.
Throughout the weekend, the absence of cliques and divisions among the U 15s was remarkable. Despite opportunities for pre-existing connections to shape social groups, the girls embraced inclusivity and created a welcoming environment where everyone felt a sense of belonging. Whether they knew each other from past teammates, summer camps, or school, it was impossible to discern who was acquainted with whom, as they all stood united as the JCC Warriors.
The impact of this grassroots initiative reaches far beyond the hockey rink. It has instilled in these Jewish girls a sense of pride, teamwork, and community spirit that will stay with them long after the tournament has ended. The JCC Warriors have proven that through sports, incredible bonds can be formed, and barriers can be broken down, uniting young athletes under a common goal.
The journey of the JCC Warriors serves as an inspiration to others, demonstrating the power of collective effort and the rewards of pursuing a shared passion. This initiative has opened doors for Jewish girls in the GTA to participate in organized hockey, fostering a sense of empowerment and encouraging them to pursue their dreams, both on and off the ice.

The organizers, parents, coaches, and supporters who made the JCC Warriors a reality deserve commendation for their dedication and vision. Their commitment to creating a safe and inclusive space for Jewish girls to play hockey has not only enriched the lives of the participants but also strengthened the Jewish community as a whole.
Looking ahead, the future of the JCC Warriors shines brightly. With each practice, game, and tournament, these talented athletes will continue to grow, evolve, and inspire others. Their journey has only just begun, and as they continue to build upon their successes, the JCC Warriors will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the world of Jewish sports.
As the tournament in Niagara Falls concluded, the JCC Warriors left a lasting impression on all those who witnessed their journey. The story of these remarkable athletes serves as a testament to the transformative power of sports, reminding us that it is not just about winning games, but about building relationships, forging lifelong memories, and celebrating the diverse talents within the Jewish community.
The story of the JCC Warriors reminds us of the power of shared experiences, common goals, and unwavering support. Through their love for hockey, these Jewish girls have become ambassadors of friendship, breaking barriers, and fostering a sense of community that extends far beyond the ice rink.
The legacy of the JCC Warriors will continue to inspire future generations of Jewish girls who aspire to lace up their skates and pursue their passion for hockey. Their collective efforts, determination, and camaraderie have made an impact that will resonate for years to come, embodying the true spirit of sportsmanship and the power of unity.
In a world where barriers can seem insurmountable, the JCC Warriors have proven that through collaboration, inclusivity, and shared goals, extraordinary achievements can be realized. Their story will serve as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding us all of the incredible things that can be accomplished when we come together as a community. The JCC Warriors have etched their names in the annals of Jewish sports history, forever remembered for their passion, resilience, and unwavering team spirit.
