Critics argue that while the US demands action from Israel, such as halting settlement expansion, it fails to exert similar pressure on the Palestinian Authority (PA).

US Ambassador Tom Nides’s comment on the recent cold-blooded murder of four Jews in Israel has drawn criticism for its lack of clarity and decisive action. While expressing condolences to the grieving families, Ambassador Nides refrained from explicitly identifying the perpetrators or labeling the incident as a terrorist attack.

The choice of words by Ambassador Nides has raised eyebrows, with his emphasis on the senselessness of the murders rather than unequivocally condemning the act itself. This focus on the efficacy of the killings rather than the murders has been met with skepticism, leading to questions about the US government’s stance on the issue.

These comments from Ambassador Nides come in the wake of US Secretary of State Blinken’s recent statement at the Aipac conference, where he singled out Israeli settlement expansion as the main obstacle to a “horizon of hope.” This apparent imbalance in addressing the concerns of both sides of the conflict has sparked further scrutiny of US foreign policy.

Critics argue that while the US demands action from Israel, such as halting settlement expansion, it fails to exert similar pressure on the Palestinian Authority (PA). The PA’s controversial law that rewards anyone who murders a Jew with a salary for life has not been condemned outright by US officials, who merely express their disapproval.

Furthermore, the US has not called for the removal of textbooks and teachers within the PA educational system who glorify acts of violence against Jews. This discrepancy in addressing incitement has been a point of contention, as the US continues to support the PA while failing to demand substantive changes.

The US’s lack of comment on the Palestinian Security Forces’ (PSF) responsibility for over 8,000 armed attacks on Israeli roads has also raised concerns. The PSF, trained by the US and Canada to combat terrorism, has been implicated in acts of violence, casting doubt on the effectiveness of this training program.

In a surprising move, the US announced its intention to renew funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) despite the organization’s failure to address incitement in its schools. The US-UNRWA accord stipulated the removal of incitement as a prerequisite for American funding, making the decision to provide unconditional funds puzzling.

Critics highlight the irony that, at the same time as the funding renewal, UNRWA conducted arms training summer camps for approximately 100,000 students, some as young as nine years old. These camps, held in honor of individuals caught and killed while attempting to murder Jews, cast doubt on the efficacy of UNRWA’s efforts to promote peace and reconciliation.

Criticism of the US government’s statements and actions regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has been fueled by recent revelations of a news and research agency’s documentation of UNRWA arms training summer camps. These developments underscore concerns about the US’s commitment to combating terrorism and promoting a balanced approach in the region.
