In the ongoing quest for peace in the Middle East, one country’s stance remains a significant obstacle to progress. Saudi Arabia, as the head of the Arab League of Nations, continues to resist peace and maintain a hostile attitude towards Israel. With the Arab League’s charter advocating for the liquidation of Jews in Palestine and Saudi Arabia’s involvement in launching total war against Israel in 1948, the need for genuine peace normalization remains paramount.

To achieve peace normalization, Saudi Arabia must take four essential steps. Firstly, as Saudi Arabia continues to finance the Palestinian Authority (PA) education system, it should demand the removal of violent PA texts, teachers, youth clubs, and summer camps that promote full-scale war against Jews. Supporting a curriculum that indoctrinates the next generation for total war contradicts the principles of peace and normalizing relations.

Secondly, Saudi Arabia remains a significant funder of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), which perpetuates the existence of 6.7 million descendants of Arab refugees from the 1948 war in squalid refugee camps. True normalization for peace would involve advocating for the dignified resettlement of these refugees rather than clinging to the unrealistic “right of return” to villages that no longer exist.

Thirdly, the Saudis must address their financial support of the PA’s statute that rewards individuals who murder Jews with salaries for life. This incentive for violence undermines any notion of peace normalization and perpetuates a cycle of conflict and bloodshed.

Lastly, Saudi Arabia could demand the removal of PA maps that delete Israel and replace Jewish community names with those of Arab villages in Saudi-financed schools. The use of such distorted maps in educational institutions promotes a skewed and biased understanding of the region and hampers efforts for genuine peace.

For true normalization in the context of peace, Saudi Arabia should present maps in all schools that depict all United Nations member states, including Israel. These four steps, if implemented, would pave the way for genuine normalization and foster an environment conducive to peace between Saudi Arabia and Israel.

However, the pursuit of normalization for peace is not currently on Saudi Arabia’s agenda. Instead, the country continues to wage a genocidal war that began in 1948, hindering any progress towards a peaceful resolution. Critics argue that those who support such normalization efforts prioritize business opportunities over the pursuit of genuine peace. The presence of handsome Saudi investment portfolios among veterans of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) raises concerns about the influence of financial incentives on their stance.

In Arabic society, gratuities or “bakshish” are acceptable, but in most other contexts, they are viewed as bribes. The focus should not be on personal profits but on the pursuit of peace. Israel, as the land of prophets, should not be reduced to a mere oasis for financial gains.

As the Middle East strives for lasting peace, it is crucial for Saudi Arabia to reconsider its position and take concrete actions towards peace normalization with Israel. Only by addressing the core issues and adopting a genuine commitment to peace can Saudi Arabia contribute to a more harmonious and prosperous region.
