Israel’s Minister for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism, Amichai Chikli, called on Canada to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem during his four-day visit to Ottawa on May 31.
Addressing a group of predominantly Christian politicians on Parliament Hill, Chikli expressed his gratitude to Canada for its enduring friendship with Israel while emphasizing the support of key conservative figures who advocate for Israel and Jerusalem. Notably, he highlighted that several countries, including the United States, Guatemala, Honduras, and Kosovo, have already recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s official capital and moved their embassies. However, Canada’s official policy maintains that any relocation should wait until the international status of Jerusalem is resolved through peace negotiations with the Palestinians.
Chikli underscored Jerusalem’s historical significance to the Jewish people, emphasizing its status as a united city with ancient ties to Israel. He reminded the audience, which included Green Party leader Elizabeth May, that King David established Jerusalem as Israel’s capital 3,000 years ago. He criticized those who deny Jerusalem’s connection to the Jewish people, citing the efforts to erase biblical evidence of Jewish presence.
Chikli delivered a similar message during a gala event at the Canada Christian College in Whitby, Ontario, where he addressed nearly 1,000 evangelical Christian leaders. He acknowledged the crucial support from the evangelical Christian community in North America, which he considers an important base of support for Israel.
During his visit, Chikli held extensive meetings with Jewish leaders and organizations, including UJA Federation of Greater Toronto, Federation CJA in Montreal, and the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs. His focus was to understand the challenges faced by Jewish schools in Canada, particularly regarding high tuition costs and enrollment outside the Orthodox system. Chikli was impressed by the initiatives taken by these organizations, such as subsidies and tuition freezes, to enhance Jewish education.
In line with his commitment to combating antisemitism, Chikli urged local leaders to adopt an uncompromising approach in the face of rising antisemitism, particularly on campuses. He identified the “progressive” camp as the main source of antisemitism, accusing them of portraying Jews as oppressors complicit in alleged “Zionist imperialism and colonialism.”

Chikli’s visit to Canada followed his recent announcement of a $53 million investment by Israel in reinforcing Jewish education in North America through the Alef Bet project. While most of the funding is expected to support Jewish teacher training in the United States, Chikli praised the Canadian approaches and suggested studying their best practices for broader application throughout North America.
He acknowledged the strong and cohesive Jewish community in Canada, which he believes many Israelis are unaware of, calling for greater awareness and engagement between the Israeli and Canadian Jewish communities. Chikli suggested programs like the Shinshinim, where Israelis spend a year in service before entering the army, as a means to bridge this awareness gap and foster closer ties.
As Chikli concluded his diplomatic tour with a visit to New York City, where he participated in an Israel-themed parade and a conference, he expressed admiration for the magnificent Canadian Jewish community and its deep Zionist connections. He highlighted the need to close the knowledge gap among Israelis about the Canadian Jewish community’s size and importance. Chikli’s visit aimed to strengthen Israel’s relationships with Canada and garner support for Israel’s position on Jerusalem.
While he faced some opposition from Israeli expatriates critical of the Netanyahu government, Chikli was impressed by the unity and strong Zionist identity of the Canadian Jewish community. He believes that by fostering closer ties, raising awareness, and investing in Jewish education, Israel can further strengthen its bond with the Canadian Jewish community. As Chikli departed for New York City, he expressed his gratitude to Canada for the warm reception and vowed to continue working towards deepening the connections between Israel and its global diaspora, with a particular focus on combating antisemitism and promoting Jewish education.
