A highly contentious event is set to take place on May 31 at Parliament Hill in Ottawa, which has sparked concerns among supporters of Israel. Promising to be a gathering of prominent anti-Israel activists, the event titled “Embracing Responsibility: Canada’s responsibility towards Palestine under international law” will be hosted by three members of Parliament—Alexandre Boulerice, Elizabeth May, and Mario Beaulieu.
The announcement of the event has raised eyebrows due to its explicit criticism of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism. Referring to the definition as having a “chilling” effect, the organizers aim to challenge the widely accepted understanding of antisemitism.
Karen Rodman, a vocal supporter of the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, known for her condemnation of Israel as an “apartheid” state, has been appointed as the moderator for the discussion. Rodman’s involvement further underscores the event’s controversial nature.
The panel of speakers includes six individuals who have been vocal critics of Israel and have made inflammatory statements in the past. Among them is Francesca Albanese, the United Nations special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, who has drawn criticism for comparing Israelis to Nazis. Also on the panel is Michael Lynk, a former holder of the same U.N. role, who has a well-documented history of making anti-Israel remarks.
In addition to Albanese and Lynk, four other speakers are scheduled to address the event. These individuals have actively lobbied against the IHRA working definition, advocated for Israel to be investigated by the International Criminal Court in The Hague, expressed support for former UK Labour head Jeremy Corbyn, and characterized Israel as “a colonial project from the very beginning.”
The gathering has sparked concerns among pro-Israel groups, who view the event as promoting a one-sided narrative and an unbalanced discussion on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They argue that the panel’s composition lacks diversity and fails to represent a range of perspectives on the issue.

In response, pro-Israel organizations have expressed their disappointment and called for a more inclusive and balanced dialogue that considers the complexities of the conflict. They argue that hosting an event with such a strong anti-Israel focus could further polarize the discussion and hinder efforts towards achieving a peaceful resolution.
The event on Parliament Hill will undoubtedly attract significant attention and debate, as supporters and critics of the panel’s viewpoints clash over the framing of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. As tensions continue to rise, it remains to be seen how the event will impact public opinion and efforts towards fostering understanding and dialogue on this contentious issue.
