Canadian Members of Parliament (MPs) engaged in discussions about the appropriate level of public challenge they should present to Israel’s government regarding its plans for judicial reform and expanded building in Judea and Samaria. The debates took place during the 2nd Annual Canadian Summit for Israel-Jewish Affairs, a gathering held to mark Israel’s 75th anniversary and reflect on Canada’s relations with Israel. As Ottawa increasingly expresses concerns over Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s policies, questions arise about the best approach for Canadian MPs to address these issues.
The Canadian government has recently voiced concerns about the expansion of building of Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria and the proposed measures to allow Israel’s parliament to overturn Supreme Court decisions. These developments drew attention from MPs who questioned how to balance the friendship between the two countries with the need to address problematic actions.
Liberal MP Ya’ara Saks emphasized the importance of calling out friendly countries when they are on an unfavorable path. In contrast, Liberal MP Anthony Housefather believes most disagreements should be raised in private.
A significant focus of the panel discussion was the ongoing judicial reform in Israel, which has prompted mass demonstrations. While Saks expressed concern about the reform, she reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to advocating for a two-state solution. She stressed the importance of aid funding for projects aimed at reducing tensions and building conditions for peace. Housefather argued for raising concerns about Israeli democracy in private, emphasizing that Israel is often singled out at international organizations.
Conservative Deputy Leader Melissa Lantsman believes it is not her role to weigh in on domestic political matters in Israel, emphasizing the need for consensus among her constituents.
Lantsman stressed the importance of maintaining as many friends as possible during challenging times, given the Jewish community’s historically limited support. NDP MP Randall Garrison urged his party leader, Jagmeet Singh, to be more forceful in highlighting the party’s support for a two-state solution while acknowledging the presence of anti-Israel and antisemitic voices within the party.
The 2nd Annual Canadian Summit for Israel-Jewish Affairs provided an important platform for Canadian MPs to discuss and evaluate Canada’s relationship with Israel, particularly in light of concerns regarding the Israeli government’s policies. The debates centered around finding the right balance between maintaining a strong friendship with Israel and raising objections to actions that go against international law and human rights principles.
The discussions at the summit showcased Canada’s commitment to promoting peace, justice, and the well-being of both Israelis and Palestinians. Despite differing opinions among MPs on the best approach, there was an overall consensus that Canada should continue advocating for a two-state solution and supporting initiatives that foster dialogue and reduce tensions between the parties involved.

Moving forward, it is vital for MPs to strike a delicate balance between public critique and private diplomacy. Recognizing the importance of maintaining strong relationships with international partners, while also voicing concerns about issues that impact the rights and well-being of both Israelis and Palestinians, will be crucial.
Through constructive engagement and a steadfast commitment to dialogue, Canada can play a significant role in promoting peace and stability in the region while upholding its core values of justice, human rights, and equality for all.
The 2nd Annual Canadian Summit for Israel-Jewish Affairs served as a reminder of the complex nature of Canada’s relationship with Israel and the ongoing efforts to navigate the challenges it presents. By fostering dialogue, understanding different perspectives, and finding common ground, Canadian MPs can contribute to a peaceful and just resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict while maintaining a strong bond with Israel as a valued partner in the pursuit of shared goals.
