The state of Virginia in the United States has taken an important step in the fight against antisemitism by embracing the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s (IHRA) working definition of antisemitism.

With the signing of the bill by  Governor Glenn Youngkin on May 8, the state joins 29 others in the country to adopt the IHRA’s definition, which has become an important educational tool in recognizing and combating rising Jew-hatred in America.

The move was welcomed by Jewish organizations, including B’nai B’rith, a Jewish advocacy group that has been at the forefront of efforts to combat antisemitism. In a statement, the group said, “We hope other state governments will follow Virginia’s example, as a commonly accepted definition of antisemitism is vital so that all levels of society can recognize the problem and take steps to combat it.”

The IHRA’s working definition of antisemitism is a comprehensive document that includes a range of examples of antisemitism, including denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, using double standards to criticize Israel, and drawing comparisons between contemporary Israeli policy and that of the Nazis.

Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares, who had visited Auschwitz earlier this year, praised the state’s decision, saying, “It is up to us, the living, to remember the legacy of the past and to remember, indeed, the horrors of what came before us.”

Miyares’ visit to the concentration camp underscored the importance of combating antisemitism in all its forms, and the adoption of the IHRA’s definition is seen as a vital tool in that fight.

Meanwhile, the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador have also adopted the IHRA’s definition, becoming the sixth province in Canada to do so. This was  welcomed by Jewish groups, including the Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center (FSWC), a Canadian organization dedicated to combating antisemitism and promoting tolerance.

According to Michael Levitt, president and CEO of FSWC, the decision by Newfoundland and Labrador sends “a strong message that it is an ally of the Jewish community … and is committed to confronting antisemitism in all its forms.” This sentiment was echoed by Jewish organizations in the United States, who welcomed Virginia’s decision as an important step in the fight against antisemitism.

In a world where antisemitism continues to be a growing problem, the adoption of the IHRA’s definition is seen as a critical tool in the fight against hate.

We have exposed the distorted hateful agenda of the “progressive” left political radicals who brought Linda Sarsour to our cities, and we were first to report on many disturbing incidents of Nazi-based hate towards Jews across Canada.
