Theodor Herzl, known as the father of modern political Zionism, dreamed of creating a “normal” Jewish state. His vision of a Jewish homeland where Jews could live free from persecution and discrimination remains a core principle of the State of Israel to this day. However, the concept of “normalization” is not a term found in law or diplomacy. Nevertheless, Israelis are pleased to hear that some of their adversaries are now considering a policy of normalization.

Israel’s enemies have conducted a genocidal war throughout Israel’s history, making the prospect of a shift toward normalization a breath of fresh air. The Arab League of Nations, whose 1945 charter called for the liquidation of the Jews in Palestine, launched a total war in 1948 that continues to this day. Similarly, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) issued a covenant of total annihilation of the Jews of Palestine in 1964, which remains in force today.

Despite Egypt and Jordan signing peace treaties with Israel, and Syria and Lebanon agreeing to an armistice with the Jewish state, Saudi Arabia, the kingpin of the Arab League, has never agreed to any armistice or peace with the Jews. The PLO signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1993, yet Fatah, the leading entity of the PLO, did not ratify the agreement.

Now, news reports suggest that the Saudis and the PLO, operating under the nascent Palestinian Authority, are ready to normalize with the Jews.

Normalization would involve Arab countries accepting Israel as a legitimate state and establishing diplomatic and economic relations with it. It would mark a significant departure from past policy, where Arab countries refused to recognize Israel’s right to exist and viewed it as an enemy state. The prospect of normalization has been welcomed by Israelis, who see it as a step towards a more peaceful Middle East.

Normalization could also lead to other positive outcomes, such as increased trade and economic opportunities between Israel and Arab countries. It could also facilitate cooperation on issues of regional security, such as countering Iran’s nuclear program and terrorist organizations like Hamas and Hezbollah.

The prospect of normalization between Israel and its neighbors is a positive development that could lead to greater stability and prosperity in the region. However, it will require genuine efforts on both sides to build trust and work towards a lasting peace. Ultimately, only time will tell if normalization will become a reality, but the fact that it is being discussed is a sign of progress towards a more peaceful Middle East.

To truly achieve normalization between Israel and its Arab neighbors, certain concrete steps must be taken. These steps should include the removal of texts and teachers within the Palestinian Authority who advocate for war against Jews, as such rhetoric goes directly against the spirit of normalization. The resettlement of descendants of Arab refugees from the 1948 war who currently reside in UNRWA refugee camps under the guise of a “right of return” to non-existent pre-1948 villages must also be addressed. This issue has long been a roadblock to peace and must be resolved to move forward with normalization.

Additionally, the repeal of the PA statute that provides lifelong salaries to individuals who murder Jews must be implemented. This abhorrent law stands in direct contrast to peaceful intentions and must be eradicated. Finally, the removal of maps in Palestinian Authority schools that delete Israel and replace the names of Jewish communities with those of Arab villages must be addressed.

While these four steps provide a solid foundation for real normalization, they are currently not on the agenda. To truly achieve normalization, all parties involved must commit to these necessary changes and work together towards a brighter future. It is only through true effort and dedication that peace and normalization can be achieved.
