The Montreal Holocaust Museum is proud to announce the first French recording in the Dimensions in Testimony collection by USC Shoah Foundation. This collection of interactive biographies offers visitors the opportunity to have “conversations” with pre-recorded video images of Holocaust survivors.
Marguerite Élias Quddus, a Montreal-based survivor, is featured in the recording. To celebrate the occasion, the museum is hosting a public event in French in partnership with Concordia University’s Centre for Oral History and Digital Storytelling on May 11th at 7:00 pm. Edith Umugiraneza, Indexer at the USC Shoah Foundation, Eszter Andor, MHM Commemoration and Oral History Coordinator, and Marguerite Élias Quddus will all be in attendance.
Dimensions in Testimony allows people to ask questions that prompt real-time responses from pre-recorded video interviews with Holocaust survivors and other witnesses to genocide. The project integrates advanced filming techniques, specialized display technologies, and next-generation natural language processing to create an interactive biography.
While the Montreal Holocaust Museum already has a collection of over 870 recorded testimonies of Holocaust survivors, this marks the Museum’s first interactive biography. Once Marguerite’s interactive biography has been adequately tested, a final version will be presented in a custom-built testimony room at the new downtown Montreal Holocaust Museum, set to open in 2025.
“We are honored to invite the public to take a behind-the-scenes look at the future of preserving survivor testimony,” stated Daniel Amar, Executive Director of the Montreal Holocaust Museum. “The human connection replicated by an interactive biography will allow future generations to discover Marguerite’s story of loss and survival, but also her individuality and resilience. Dimensions in Testimony enables visitors to comprehend the diversity, uniqueness, and complexity of each survivor story.”
Marguerite Élias Quddus was born on December 4, 1936, in Paris, France. In August 1941, Marguerite’s father was deported to the Drancy transit camp and then to the Compiègne camp. From Compiègne, he was transferred to Auschwitz where he was murdered in April 1942. In the summer of 1942, Marguerite’s mother began looking for hiding places for herself and her two daughters. From that summer until the spring of 1945, Marguerite and her sister Henriette lived with several families and in convents, hiding their Jewish identities. In the spring of 1945, Marguerite and her sister reunited with their mother who had survived under a false identity in Lyon. Together they returned to Paris. In 1965, Marguerite married Abdul Quddus, and in 1967, they moved to Canada. Marguerite now lives in Montreal.

The recording of Marguerite Elias Quddus’ story for Dimensions in Testimony was made possible in partnership between the USC Shoah Foundation, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, and the Montreal Holocaust Museum. Dimensions in Testimony was developed in association with the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, with technology by USC Institute for Creative Technologies, and concept by Conscience Display.
Funding for Dimensions in Testimony was provided in part by Pears Foundation, Louis F. Smith, Melinda Goldrich and Andrea Cayton/Goldrich Family Foundation in honor of Jona Goldrich, Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, and Genesis Philanthropy Group.
As antisemitism is on the rise in North America and around the world, Dr. Robert J. Williams, Finci-Viterbi Executive Director of USC Shoah Foundation, stated, “It is our urgent responsibility to collect and listen to the stories of Holocaust survivors, as they are a powerful tool to combat ignorance and hate. By sharing these personal testimonies, we can learn about the consequences of prejudice and discrimination and work towards creating a more tolerant and inclusive society. USC Shoah Foundation’s mission is to ensure that the voices of survivors are never silenced and that their stories are used to educate future generations. Through the Institute’s work, we can honor the memories of those lost during the Holocaust and help prevent similar atrocities from occurring in the future.”
