On May 3, Keren Kayemet LeYisrael-Jewish National Fund (KKL-JNF) hosted a tree-planting event in the Jerusalem Forest near Yad Vashem, which was attended by 80 diplomats representing countries ranging from Albania to Zambia. The event was held to celebrate Israel’s 75th birthday, and each diplomat planted a tree in the area that had been ravaged by fire and later by a snowstorm. The ceremony was symbolic, according to Victoria Myrav, head of international government relations for KKL-JNF, and aimed at strengthening the bonds between countries while connecting foreign diplomats to the land and to the State of Israel.
Israel’s Foreign Minister, Eli Cohen, and Ifat Ovadia-Luski, chairwoman of KKL-JNF, welcomed the ambassadors to the event. Myrav said that KKL-JNF restored the forest and recreation areas with funds raised through generous donations abroad. She added that planting trees helps to promote knowledge-sharing in forestry, climate change, and fighting desertification, and invites foreign delegations to visit Israel to learn more about their expertise in reforesting semi-arid areas.
Myrav said that KKL-JNF’s outreach to foreign governments aims to share their knowledge in the field of forestry and to connect people to the land of Israel. She emphasized that KKL-JNF sends delegations abroad and invites foreign delegations to learn from their experts in Israel. Myrav added that this approach helps to strengthen the bonds between countries and connect foreign diplomats to the land of Israel.
KKL-JNF will host another ceremony with Kenyan President William Ruto next week. He is set to plant an olive tree in the Grove of Nations, an area in the Jerusalem Forest reserved for presidents and prime ministers.
Unlike regular folks who plant trees with KKL-JNF, presidents and prime ministers receive a sign identifying their trees. They can come and visit the tree they planted, which is part of the Israeli government’s outreach.
The Jerusalem Forest, which covers approximately 2,500 acres, is a vital green lung for Jerusalem and the surrounding area. The forest was severely damaged by a forest fire in 2016, which burned more than 30% of the forest’s trees. In the following year, a snowstorm damaged even more trees, and KKL-JNF launched a reforestation project to restore the forest to its previous state.

Israel has long been known for its expertise in the field of reforestation and afforestation. KKL-JNF has been responsible for planting over 240 million trees in Israel since its establishment in 1901. Their efforts have transformed barren landscapes into forests and parks, making Israel a greener and more livable country.
The tree-planting event hosted by KKL-JNF highlights the importance of preserving and restoring natural habitats, and the importance of international cooperation in achieving these goals. Through such events, KKL-JNF is not only contributing to Israel’s environmental goals but also promoting stronger ties with foreign governments and their representatives.
