It was recently reported in the media that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told Azerbaijan’s president in a telephone conversation that the United States is “deeply concerned that Azerbaijan’s establishment of a checkpoint on the Lachin Corridor undermines efforts to establish confidence in the peace process and emphasized the importance of reopening the Lachin Corridor to commercial and private vehicles as soon as possible.” Azerbaijan established the checkpoints in response to Armenian weapons supplies to Karabakh, as well as nefarious Iranian activity in the region.
These comments were made as talks continue between Yerevan and Baku in Washington, DC. Although few details have emerged about the talks, Blinken considers the dialogue between Yerevan and Baku “the key to achieving lasting peace in the South Caucuses.” He claims that the foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia are “working together to achieve a peaceful future for the South Caucasus region.”
US State Department Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel added: “We believe that peace between these two countries is possible and we are happy to accept them. We expect peace and stability between these two countries and in the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.”
In response to these developments, former Israeli Communication Minister Ayoob Kara stated in an exclusive interview: “Secretary Blinken is making a fatal mistake in issuing this statement. The main champions of removing the Azerbaijani checkpoint along the Lachin Corridor are the Islamic Republic of Iran, who are greatly disturbed with how the establishment of this checkpoint undermines Iran’s efforts to destabilize the region. The Azerbaijanis continue to let humanitarian aid pass through. The only thing that they are blocking off is landmines and other weapons, which recently killed three Azerbaijani citizens. It is part of Iran’s grand efforts to destabilize the region to have uninhabited access to Karabakh and the Iranians are disturbed that this checkpoint blocks that.”
Dr. Moredechai Kedar, who sits on the board of the Dona Gracia Center for Diplomacy, explained why the Iranians are so opposed to the Azerbaijanis reasserting control over the Lachin Corridor: “The Iranians if they could would annex Azerbaijan to Iran. Their thinking is imperialistic. If anyone like Israel or Azerbaijan stands in the way, they do not like it. This is why Azerbaijan and Israel are so close because they share the same enemy. The Iranians hate the Azerbaijanis. They want to subjugate them to the Iranian regime.”

Professor Nursin Guney, who sits on the Advisory Board of the Dona Gracia Center for Diplomacy, added: “Of course it is a legitimate right for Azerbaijan to do it. They weren’t there to restrict them, to block civilians, but they are stopping the smuggling of armaments and that kind of stuff. They are trying to secure the passage of the Lachin Corridor. I do not agree with Secretary Blinken’s statement – on the contrary, we know that Azerbaijan very much wants a peace process. They are there to preserve the rights of Armenians as well.”
Guney concluded: “The grievance comes from the Iranian side, who seeks to destabilize the region. Washington’s concerns should be diverted to that point of that situation. I agree with the Azerbaijanis that they are preserving the right of Armenian citizens living in Karabakh and this checkpoint is just for ensuring the right to safe passage.”
