Marking Jewish Heritage Month, the Canadian government celebrates the achievements and contributions of Jewish Canadians. Speaking about the occasion, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion Ahmed Hussen said, “Today marks the beginning of Jewish Heritage Month, a time to celebrate and recognize Jewish culture, faith, history and the immense contributions the communities have made to the social, political and economic fabric across Canada.”
Hussen praised Jewish Canadians for their “important roles in advancing medicine and the sciences, human rights, philanthropy, the media, the arts, and business.” He also noted that Canada is the “proud home” of 400,000 Jews, the fourth-largest community in the world.
However, Hussen highlighted the fact that Jewish communities in Canada and globally still face mounting antisemitism and hate. “This is a lived reality for the communities, it is unacceptable, and it is our collective responsibility to denounce and combat hate whenever and wherever it occurs,” he said.
The Canadian government has taken steps to combat antisemitism, including allocating $5.6 million over five years to support the work of the Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism, Irwin Cotler. The government has also doubled Canada’s annual contribution to the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance.
“Our government provided $20 million to support the construction of the new Holocaust Museum in Montréal and $2.5 million for the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Education Centre in Toronto,” Hussen added. “We also amended Canada’s Criminal Code to make it a crime to wilfully promote antisemitism by condoning, denying or downplaying the Holocaust.”
Irwin Cotler, the Special Envoy on Preserving Holocaust Remembrance and Combatting Antisemitism, expressed gratitude for the government’s commitment to combating antisemitism.
“This is a clear signal that Canada is a leader in the fight against antisemitism,” Cotler said. “The Government of Canada is determined to fight antisemitism and to defend and promote Holocaust remembrance, and to promote human rights and the rule of law, in Canada and abroad.”

Michael Levitt, President and CEO of Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies, echoed the sentiment, saying, “It is so important that the Canadian government is taking this issue seriously, and is actively fighting against the rise of antisemitism and hate in Canada and around the world.”
In light of Jewish Heritage Month, Hussen encouraged Canadians to “take this opportunity to reflect and learn more about the inspirational role Jewish Canadians have played and continue to play in our society.”
He added, “Let us continue to educate ourselves and the next generation on the importance of building a safer, more diverse and inclusive society for all.”

Thank you for choosing TheJ.Ca as your source for Canadian Jewish News.
We do news differently!
Our positioning as a Zionist News Media platform sets us apart from the rest. While other Canadian Jewish media are advocating increasingly biased progressive political and social agendas, TheJ.Ca is providing more and more readers with a welcome alternative and an ideological home.
We revealed the incursion of anti-Israel progressive elements such as IfNotNow into our communities. We have exposed the distorted hateful agenda of the “progressive” left political radicals who brought Linda Sarsour to our cities, and we were first to report on many disturbing incidents of Nazi-based hate towards Jews across Canada.
But we can’t do it alone. We need your HELP!
Our ability to thrive and grow in 2020 and beyond depends on the generosity of committed readers and supporters like you.
