Since the establishment of the state of Israel, the country has played an important role in humanitarian missions around the world, saving thousands of lives during natural disasters and other emergencies. Despite these efforts, there are those who openly advocate against Israel and ignore the contributions the country has made to global humanitarian efforts. Lt. Col. (Res.) Eyal Dror, a former IDF officer and founder of the Good Neighbor Project, recently embarked on a tour across North America to discuss the challenges of conducting humanitarian missions in enemy territories, including the transport of life-saving equipment through the Golan Heights and the evacuation of the “White Helmets” in Syria.
Dror’s tour, organized by Students Supporting Israel, visited various SSI chapters across the United States and Canada from March 27th to April 2nd, 2023. The tour covered five campuses and two community events at the following locations: Toronto Metropolitan University, University of Manitoba, Miami University, Texas A&M University, American University, and Minneapolis. During the tour, Dror shared his experiences as the founder and commander of the Good Neighbor Project, which led nearly 700 humanitarian operations on the Israeli-Syrian border, providing medical assistance to those affected by the Syrian civil war.
The final task of the Good Neighbor Project was a 10-hour rescue of 420 people, including the “White Helmets” and their families. The “White Helmets” were a group of Syrian humanitarians forced to flee by the advancing forces of President Assad’s regime. This operation was a testament to the Israeli Defense Forces’ commitment to helping those in need, even in the midst of a conflict with an enemy state.
This was Dror’s second speaking tour with Students Supporting Israel, and he described this tour as more challenging than previous ones. Many of the schools did not have a significant pro-Israel community or population that was educated about Israel. Dror found that some of the students at these schools had never met an Israeli or heard from a speaker on a subject like this. Despite these challenges, Dror was able to reach hundreds of people during the tour.
However, the tour was not without controversy. The University of Manitoba’s chapter of Students Supporting Israel experienced protests against Dror’s arrival, with members of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) among the crowd. During the question and answer session, SJP students asked inappropriate questions and did not allow Dror to respond. Despite the disruption, Dror received a message from a Muslim student at the University of Manitoba expressing his support for the Israeli people and their right to have a state of their own.
“Hey man. Do not be fazed by the anti-semitic Palestinian people you encountered at the campus when you came. I was looking for you to shake your hand and thank you for your service but I got caught up with the other Jewish people that were there, I’m Muslim myself and I wholeheartedly support the Israeli people and in the Quran it says the Israeli people have every right to have a state of their own”.

The protests continued at Toronto Metropolitan University, and the university cancelled the event, security, and room reservation the day before the event. However, with the help of SSI, the event was successfully carried out at another location.
The 2nd Eyal Dror tour was a success, even with the bumps in the road at the Canadian universities. As a grassroots organization, Students Supporting Israel has shown that it can adjust and carry on despite the challenges. Dror’s tour was a reminder of Israel’s important role in humanitarian efforts around the world, and the sacrifices made by its citizens and soldiers to help those in need, even in enemy territories. It is crucial to acknowledge these efforts and not let political disagreements overshadow the positive impact Israel has made on the world.
