Samples of antisemitism in federally financed government programs (2)
In 2017, a grant provided by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) ended up financing an art exhibit that glorified, among other things, Palestinian stone throwers who perpetrated violence under the guise of resistance, and in the process murdered 14 Israeli civilians including children and three Israeli Arabs who were mistaken for Jews.

One would think, that when dealing with sensitive subjects such as ethnic-religious hatred concerning Jews, Muslims and Islamophobia and other such things, the SSHRC would be very careful in its assessments of the quality of the applicants’ track record; the quality of their previous publications, and of the intended nature and object of the proposed publication(s) for which they are seeking a grant.
The SSHRC did not practice due diligence in the case of Jasmin Zine, a sociology professor and awarded her a grant of $24,923 for a 4-year project which comprised two parts.
The first part of the work concluded in 2019 when Wilfred Laurier University published the Canadian Muslim Voting Guide: Federal Election 2019 authored by Jasmin Zine (lead author), Fatima Chakrou and Shifa Abbas of the Islamic Studies section of the Department of Sociology. The Department classified this publication as a scholarly one. See: https://scholars.wlu.ca/soci_faculty
The Guide was released on October 18, 2019, just three days before Canadians went to the polls. Among other things, the Guide
a. makes the absurd, dangerous and wholly unsubstantiated allegation that “Zionist ideologies play a prominent role” in fomenting Islamophobia (p.6) and,
b. advocates support for the anti-Israel and antisemitic Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) Movement (pp-18-20)
Nevertheless, the Guide was given the thumbs up by Liberal and New Democratic Party leaders.
While, the gesture of the leader of the NDP is not surprising, the approval by Trudeau or for that matter any Liberal apparatchik is shocking. On the other hand, as it has been pointed out “[the behaviour] of Trudeau confirms, if confirmation was needed, that his dealings with the Jewish community and with Israel are wrapped in hypocrisy.”
On November 6, 2020 Sun Media published the news that, Canada’s Elections Commissioner Yves Coté determined that the Guide breached federal law. Coté waived all penalties in the case, noting public interest would be best served- according to an investigator’s note. “by addressing the matter using informal means,” Sun Media, Canadian Muslim Voting Guide breached federal law: Elections Commissioner, November 6 and November 13, 2020

The second part of the grant was used by Professor Zine to research and publish the report titled The Canadian Islamophobia Industry -: Mapping Islamophobia’s Ecosystem in the Great White North: Compendium of Media and non-academic sources published by the Faculty of Sociology, October 7, 2022.
One would think that in the light of the antisemitic content of the Guide, the SSHRC would have cancelled the grant. It did not.
To put it simply, this publication is even more disgusting than the Guide.
In the circumstances, I simply do not have the stomach to go on demonstrating it. Instead, I refer the reader to the following reviews: Daniel Greenfield, Canadian Gov Funds Report Attacking David Horowitz Freedom Centre- Condemning calls to murder Jews is “Islamophobia” report claims, Frontpage Mag, December 29, 2022; Bishnu Rathi, Meet Jasmine Zine, whom Trudeau and Company is Financing to Spread Antisemitism in Canada, TFI Global, January 3, 2023 (also published in Campus Watch); Raheel Raza, Opposing extremism is not Islamophobic, despite what recent report suggests, Special to National Post, Toronto, January 11, 2023; B’nai Brith, New ”Islamophobia Industry” Report Unworthy of Federal Support, B’nai Brith, December 21, 2022
Department of Heritage -Antisemitic and anti-Israeli publications
On November 3, 2022, Jonathan Bradley reported in Western Standard that “Canadian Government gave $30,000 in grants to two publications: Adbusters Magazine in Vancouver and Al-Meshwar, Arabic language newspaper based in Mississauga, ON.
Both received Covid-19 relief payments to Canadian media outlets with $3000 going to Al-Meshwar and the balance to Adbusters.
Upon being informed of the contents of these publications, the Department of Heritage launched “a review of the grants in accordance with the rules of the program”
The review of the Meshwar case did not take long to be completed. It concluded that the publication should never have received funding. As a result, the government demanded the publishers to return the funds. This paper has a long history of peddling anti-Israel and antisemitic content, among other things denying the Holocaust.
In the circumstances, the failure of the Department of Heritage to establish the how paper’s ineligibility to receive the Covid-19 benefit is incomprehensible. All they had to do is to read a few random issues of the paper. Or was the department directed to just dish out the funds.
Mike Fegelman reported in HRC: “In Adbusters’ February 21 edition, the magazine published a very disturbing “Message to the People of Palestine,” which read in part, “fight fight fight for your freedom…plunge into a third intifada…do whatever it takes…fight fight fight like hell…” Below this message, a poster appears calling for “Boycott, Divest, Sanction” of Israel, which Prime Minister Trudeau in the past has strongly condemned.” (Photo:Honestreporting.ca)
On the other hand the review of the Adbuster case seems to be proceeding at a glacial pace, if at all. Four months into the investigation, in January of the current year, Heritage Canada excused the state of affairs to the slow pace of Canadian bureaucracy. Mike Fegelman, Adbusters Magazine, Recipient of Taxpayer Funding, Encourages Palestinians “to Plunge into a Third Intifada”, Honest Reporting Canada, and February 26, 2023.
A strange and suspicious excuse, since the evidence is readily available on black and white in the issues of the publication.
And most unfortunately, these are not the only cases where the Department of Heritage or an agency of the government either did not bother to screen at all or failed the task of screening properly both the applications and the applicants. This will be illustrated by the case, or should one say the scandal of Laith Marouf.
The question which needs an answer is:
How many other antisemitIc outfits received Covid-19 or any other funding despite the fact that they were not entitled to them? We will never know.
