Last week, The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and the German government organized a ceremony to inaugurate a new UNRWA Preparatory Girls’ School in Gaza, paid for in its entirety by Germany.
The ceremony was hosted by Thomas White, Director of UNRWA Affairs in Gaza. Germany donated EUR 5 million to sponsor this school, whose compound includes shaded areas, improved ventilation in 42 renovated, wider classrooms, which have been colorfully painted, sun-breaking elements, as well as thermal and sound insulation.
The school’s roof features a green area and playground. Its library includes a theater where students can perform and play.
Thomas White noted that “Germany is one of UNRWA’s most reliable and long-standing partners, especially in Gaza, where the majority of German funds are invested.”
Germany contributed over EUR 180 million to UNRWA operations in 2022. Since the leading donor to UNRWA-the US- has delayed its aid to UNRWA until it sees an end to incitement in UNRWA education, means that Germany is now the leading donor to UNRWA.
I have sent questions to the German embassy – with no response yet:
1. Will Germany insist that UNRWA cultural events such as plays and performances at the school, desist from violent incitement?
(FULL DISCLOSURE: In 36 Years of covering UNRWA, I have encountered endless instances in which those schools run plays, songs and event which glorify the murder of Jews.
2. Will Germany insist that Israel, a member in good standing at the UN, be depicted on maps in that United Nations school?
(FURTHER FULL DISCLOSURE: I have conducted a recent conmprehensive study of maps used in UNRWA schools which will not use maps the depict Israel. 3. Will Germany ask for weapons and ammunition inspections of their UNRWA school, located in war-torn Gaza?

4. Will Germany condition funds for UNRWA education on a change in its school curriculum?
