At all events, either Jagmeet Singh or a large segment of the party membership or, more likely both were obviously not satisfied with the outcome of the 2021 Convention on the issue of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. According to Singh, the membership kept writing to him with their concerns about the human rights issues as it relates to Israel and [to a fictitious country named] Palestine.

Singh saw these letters as his opportunity to score points against the government and hopefully score some with the Muslim electorate.

Hence, in 2022 he issued an undated memorandum to the party membership where he formulated his position and set out 13 demands to the government, all of which have been ignored to date.

In the process, he breached the government’s definition of antisemitism as well as demonstrating a disheartening ignorance of the historical and current facts on the ground and of the international law governing the conflict, premised on a set of beliefs contradicted by incontrovertible evidence.

The following illustrate Singh’s ignorance of facts and law. The Memorandum states that the NDP

a. believes in working with partners for peace. In that case it is not and cannot be a partner with the PA that among other things, clearly does not want peace with Israel; finances terrorism against Israel and Israelis. On the other hand, the memorandum proposes nothing constructive about getting rid of the two terrorist groups in Gaza;

b. believes that Israel is illegally occupying Palestinian territories and that  this is at the centre of the conflict ignoring the fact that back in 1967,in the aftermath of the war, Israel was quite ready to and offered to trade territory for peace but Arafat and his successors would have nothing to do with that. Indeed, both as a matter of common sense and matter of law, it is impossible for Israel to occupy illegally, a territory to which the PA never had and still does not have sovereign legal title and therefore the Israeli settlements in Judea and Samaria cannot be illegal;

c. condemns the demolition of Palestinian homes.

These homes belong to Palestinians who commit acts of terrorism resulting in the death of innocent Israeli civilians and/or members of the IDF and/or Israeli officers of law and order. Furthermore, these demolitions are conducted in accordance with the law and following due process and the approval of the Supreme Court of Israel. Surely, this problem can be readily solved by Palestinian themselves by simply disengaging from terrorist activities;

d. alleges and condemns evictions of Palestinian squatters in the Sheik Jarrah district of Jerusalem who refuse to pay rent for homes owned by Jewish persons which were confiscated by Jordan during its illegal occupation of the West Bank from the conclusion of Israel’s War of Independence to that of the Six-Day War of 1967.

As a matter of fact, to date the Israeli government has not permitted such evictions for refusal to pay rent despite the judgment of the Supreme Court of Israel in favour of the Jewish owners of the property.

Furthermore, these straightforward landlord tenant cases could and would have been resolved expeditiously between the squatters and the owners if the P.A. had not taken these matters off their hands to make political hay of them;

e. contrary to incontrovertible evidence, alleges that Israel’s nation-state law is undemocratic, since all the citizens and residents of Israel enjoy the same democratic rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Basic Laws of Israel applied by the Israeli courts;

f. demands the removal of the blockade of Gaza despite the fact that the blockade is sanctioned by the international law governing the matter.

At all events, again, the solution to this blockade rests entirely with the two terrorist groups in Gaza. All they have to do is to stop: importing warfare materials; building a progressively more dangerous arsenal used to trigger wars against Israel; cease terrorist activities and abandon their paramount objective of destroying Israel. Succinctly put, all they have to do is to keep peace.

But for the constraints of space, I could and would have gone right through the rest of the demands which I consider to be of the same cloth as the ones reviewed above.

A featured speaker at the Nakba Day rally at City Hall in 2022, the NDP Member of Parliament for Winnipeg Centre, Leah Gazan, repeated the unsubstantiated and inflammatory claim that an Al Jazeera journalist was “brutally murdered” by the IDF (Screencap: Facebook)

In NDP’s bizarre logic, despite Israel’s multiple and genuine offers to make peace and the Palestinians’ rejection of all of them and never showed a genuine interest in making one, Israel remains the sole culprit.

This is what antisemitism is all about: Treating Israel in a way that the NDP would not treat any other country in similar situation.

At the end of the day, I find it sickening for Canada to have an antisemitic NDP leader who is ready to feed this poisonous stuff to Canadians receptive to it to the detriment of the Jewish community while pretending to stand against antisemitism during the scandal of the 2022 Palestinian Solidarity event.

And there is more. For example, MP Leah Gazan, who during  the May 2022 Winnipeg Nakba Rally spoke briefly to  spread the  piece of false news that Israel had “brutally murdered” an Al-Jazeera journalist in Jenin. Donald James, A Fly in the Wall at the Winnipeg Nakba Rally 2022, TheJ.ca, May 19, 2022

As political analyst Khaled Abu Toameh put it, The Palestinians and the World do not need Another Corrupt, Failed Terrorist State, Gatestone Institute, September 13, 2022. Nor do they need the corrupt terrorists in Gaza.
