In Canada, there are many people who assume that it is difficult to be Jewish in every country across the Muslim world. These people believe that every Muslim country is inundated with antisemitism and that Jews in every Muslim country suffer immensely. They look at the Jews in Iran and think that every Muslim majority country treats their Jewish community like that. But, Azerbaijan is not like other Muslim majority countries.
On February 14, 2023, Israel Academia Monitor will be hosting an event titled “Azerbaijan, not what you think” at the Waldman House in Even Yehuda at 8:30 pm in the evening. Dr. Dana Barnett, who heads Israel Academia Monitor, explained: “Israelis are not familiar with Azerbaijan. The public comes across Azerbaijan only through the news. It is vitally important that they meet Azerbaijanis and hear about the country, and learn about the relationship between the country and its Jews.”
Dr. Barnett added: “The idea is to introduce Azerbaijan to Israelis, as the Azerbaijani community in Israel is small and most Israelis do not know anything about it. Since the two countries have a close relationship, it is important that they learn more about it.”
One of the speakers, Saadat Sukurova Israelov, heads Kanal 24, an Azerbaijani Israeli news channel. She will be discussing what it is like to be Jewish in Azerbaijan and how Azerbaijan differs from other Muslim countries in its treatment of the Jewish community.
In an exclusive interview, she proclaimed: “I have always operated under two flags, the Azerbaijani and the Israeli flag. I am happy that I was born and raised in my homeland Azerbaijan, which is a light unto the nations. I grew up, played, enjoyed, and had fun with Muslims at school, at the university, in the work force, and at every available opportunity. Muslims in Azerbaijan honored the Jewish community.”
“Jews settled mainly in northern Azerbaijan, in the Guba region. The community of Har Yiddish in Guba is 300 years old. There, they were exposed to various influences. In order to prevent these effects, the people asked the Khan of Guba, ‘Will you protect us if you come down from the mountain?’ After the Khan answered yes, they came down to the left bank of Gudialchi. The right bank of that river is the present location of the Jewish community in Guba.”

As Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev stated, “Multi-culturalism is a policy and way of life in the State of Azerbaijan.” According to Israelov, today, Azerbaijan is one of the most recognized centers of multi-culturalism in the world: “In 1991, Azerbaijan’s independence was officially recognized by Israel. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established in 1992. Diplomatic relations have been at a high level for the last 30 years.”
“I would like to note that among the Muslim countries, Azerbaijan is the only country where Jews live comfortably, can walk freely on the street with their heads held up high and are free to live as Jews,” Israelov said. “Now the representatives of every nation living in Azerbaijan feels free and independent. In Azerbaijan, the local citizens are kind, hospitable, humane, and other people are able to express themselves comprehensively. Because whenever the rights of minorities are protected, all kinds of conditions are created for them to preserve their language, culture and religion, etc. compared to other countries.”
She added that the Azerbaijani Parliament already passed proposed law in the first reading titled “the establishment of an embassy of the Republic of Azerbaijan in the State of Israel… The opening of an Azerbaijani Embassy in Israel is an important step in the bilateral relations between the two countries.”
