According to a report in Palestinian Media Watch, Al Hayat Al Jadida, the official PA daily, recently published an op-ed by Iraqi writer Hadi Jalo Mari, which speculated that nature is currently punishing the world for allowing homosexuality:
“Despite the moderation and our understanding of people’s behavior, desires, and whims, it is our right to reject and condemn any idea and behavior that contradicts human nature, and to wonder what is the secret that causes governments of states that control the world and lead it to defend homosexuality, and even sexual perversion, and to legislate laws defending abominable behavior that contradicts the way of nature and appropriate behavior.”
They continued:
“[It is our right to wonder] what is the secret that causes an old and elderly state president like [US President Joe] Biden to march at the front and illuminate the White House in the colors of the homosexuals’ flag… and even to appoint male and female homosexual clerks to positions inside the presidential building. Hours after the White House was illuminated with the flag of homosexuality, ‘the North Pole bomb’ as it was termed exploded, and struck all of America’s territory.”
This refers to the bomb cyclone, which caused 100 deaths. The Iraqi writer blamed it on Biden’s homosexuality policy.
The Iraqi writer claimed that nature is not only punishing America but also Europe for their pro-homosexuality policies: “Has just nature risen up against those who violated its laws, and decided to punish the people with all punishments? … Here the homosexual governments in Europe and America are experiencing their worst days and suffering a shortage of rain, a rise in temperatures, and afterwards fierce cold and a lack of means of heating. This has reached the point of hunger in one of the largest empires in history (England), where the number of those registered in the lists of those asking for food from soup kitchens is rising, students are being prevented from free food at the schools, and unemployment, inflation, and concerns over the future prevail.”
In conclusion, he proclaimed: “All we have to do is to wait and see how much nature’s fury will intensify, according to the will of Heaven. We apologize to the homosexuals, the governments, and the organizations that take care of them if we have caused them a blow to morale, as we also have the right to believe in the One and Only [Allah], the Victor, to uphold His laws, and to wait and see what His will is regarding them, and also regarding us. Indeed, we are waiting.”
Homosexuals in the Palestinian Authority face a precarious situation at best. In the Gaza Strip, homosexuality is a criminal offense, with offenders facing up to 10 years imprisonment. Hundreds of LBGT Palestinians have reportedly fled to the State of Israel because of the harassment and other forms of persecution that they face in the Palestinian Authority.
Last year, Ahmad Abu Marhia, a 25-year-old gay Palestinian man in the West Bank, was beheaded. Activist Natali Farah told Israel’s Haaretz newspaper Mr Abu Marhia was well known and liked and the whole LGBTQ community was “crying now.” She added: “Everyone is scared.”

According to Ameera International, a local human rights NGO, “In Palestine, religion has a strong influence on the population, regulating people’s life and society. The Islamic law works together with the criminal and civil law ruling most civil matters between Muslims. According to Islamic law, homosexual behavior is punishable by different predetermined penalties, including flogging and hanging.”
They added that “same-sex acts in the West Bank (including East Jerusalem) have been legal since 1951 when the Jordanian Penal Code was implemented. In Gaza, however, the British Mandate Criminal Code Ordinance, No. 74 of 1936 is still in force and condemns homosexuality.”
Article 152(2) of the British Mandate Code criminalizes sexual acts ‘against the order of nature’ and stipulates penalties of up to 10 years to any person who:
(a) has carnal knowledge of any person against the order of nature;
(b) has carnal knowledge of an animal;
(c) permits a male person to have carnal knowledge of him or her against the order of nature, is guilty of a felony, and is liable to imprisonment for ten years.” While homosexuality is not criminalized in the West Bank, there are still no laws to protect homosexuals there against harassment and other forms of persecution.
