“For me and my fellow Jewish students, Israel-hating rhetoric and Jewish-hating rhetoric feels the same because they are the same: Both are anti-Semitism,” said Joey Karlan, Club Z alumnus.

Gary Broom found himself- and his clients- on the receiving end of a Holocaust-denier unleashing a barrage of obscenities earlier this month. Calgary police has charged the boor who interrupted what should have been an uneventful walk for Broom with his client’s dog. (Screencap: Global News)

Imagine doing a mitzvah and being accosted out of the blue on the street about being Jewish. Then you get yelled at, about the Holocaust being a fraudulent claim. Such was a recent incident in the life of Gary Broom of Calgary, who provides a dog-walking service to an elderly couple.
They happen to be the parents of Rabbi Nisan Andrews of Congregation House of Jacob-Mikveh Israel. To Broom’s shock, their neighbour across the road turned out to be an unhinged Jew-hater.
“You’re a Jew!” the man yelled on November 12 as Broom was outside with the pet, hurling abuse so loudly that the couple came out of the house to see what was happening. “The Holocaust never happened, it was a hoax!” the assailant continued, directly further antisemitic insults at the couple, who have been in that home since 2004.
“My clients obviously feel unsafe in their own home with this guy living directly across the street”, Broom explained to Global News. He contacted police, who investigated and have charged the antisemite with criminal harassment.
“I thought there has to be a deterrent, if he believes he can come and bully this elderly couple and bully anybody else, where’s it gonna escalate to?”
Pointe-Claire Mayor Tim Thomas was apologetic the day after a November 16 council meeting, but a Jewish council member was standing her ground.
According to a report in the Suburban, after a yet-undisclosed antisemetic slur was heard at the session, an elementary school teacher who represents District 4 with the Island of Montreal municipality announced on her Facebook account, “I will no longer attend meetings where I must sit at the same table but receive a briefing from colleagues and exchange with staffers instead.”
Tara Stainforth, who is chair of the city’s Diversity and Social Inclusion Committee, didn’t disclose who said it or what was said. She continued, “Furthermore, I will use the rest of the 2022 (sic) to contemplate whether or not I shall continue as a Councillor in such an environment.”
“Rather than admit wrongdoing and commit to do better,” Stainforth wrote, “this person tried to excuse using a slur as my perception of the expression.”
“We’re not always aware,” Stainforth explained to the Suburban, “that things we say have racist connotations.” She tried and failed to get it dealt with immediately but got no backing from her cohorts, even after she threatened to go public if the mayor did not offer a written apology. “I also let my fellow councillors know that I was disappointed in their lack of immediate action.”

B’nai Brith Canada has sent a letter to Ontario’s NDP leader, demanding that he expel MPP Joel Harden of Ottawa-Centre.
Harden was forced to apologize on November 19 after a podcast interview emerged during which he spoke about pressuring “Jewish neighbours here about how much longer we should put up with… the Israeli occupation of Palestinian lands… it is a deeply racist project, sadly, that’s being built in Israel.”
“Mr. Harden’s implication that Jewish-Canadians are responsible for the actions of the State of Israel is deeply disturbing,” said Michael Mostyn, Chief Executive Officer of B’nai Brith Canada. “He implies dual loyalty, one of the oldest and most vile antisemitic tropes. Our organization is adamant that the NDP caucus must act firmly and swiftly to eject Mr. Harden for his history of antisemitism and apologism for terror groups, and the Ontario Legislature must publicly condemn and repudiate his dangerous comments.”
Explaining why the organization believes that Peter Tabuns must evict Harden, Mostyn concluded: “The Ontario NDP can no longer afford to have him in its ranks.”
