The French Senate recently voted to impose sanctions on Azerbaijan by a vote of 295 to one. The resolution proposed sanctions on Baku over “attacks” on Armenia and “aggression against Karabakh.”
Following these developments, Russian analyst Igor Korotchenko said that the French Senate should be renamed the French Armenian Diaspora Senate: “Money does not smell. Apparently, each of those senators who voted for was guided by this thesis. As you know, in France, even ex-presidents work as consultants for Armenian billionaires. See the example of Sarkozy. He took bribes from Libya as president. What about Macron?”
Pastor Saeed Abedini, an Iranian Christian leader in the House Church Movement, stated: “I am very disappointed about western policies regarding the human rights situation in Iran. Last year, in bloody street protests which turned into a revolution, more than 2,000 people were shot dead in the heart and head. They were mostly minors and virgin girls. More than 20,000 people have been arrested including my cousins Mohammed and Nazarin, and all of them are enduring terrible physical, emotional and sexual torture. Some of them will have been executed by the time you have read this article. Others were raped for weeks on end. However, while the West verbally condemns this, they never take action.”
I believe that the French Senate should have instead voted to apply more sanctions on Iran, a country that is building a nuclear program and routinely chants “death to America” and “death to Israel,” not a country who greatly values pluralism, multiculturalism and women’s rights, especially at a time when Europe needs a solution to gas shortages caused by the war in Ukraine and Azerbaijani gas and oil is a viable solution to this problem.
As women are killed for demanding to have the right to wear Western dress, a supposed French value, the French government chooses instead to sanction Azerbaijan, a country where women have the freedom to dress however they like. As we speak, the human rights situation deteriorates in Iran by the day. Why is France not up in arms about that?
Tarlan Ahmadov, the founder of the Azerbaijani Society of Maine, argued that the Azerbaijanis in Iran are also suffering gravely under this regime, “As Azerbaijani Americans, we are very disturbed with this situation in Iran. The economic struggles of Azerbaijanis in Iran are well known and now they want to kill people that want to be free and independent. They kill and repress their own people, murdering women. This is obviously very bad.”
“We suffer here in Europe from Iranian intelligence plots that were foiled so many times, especially that of Ayatollah Asadi,” explained Manel Msalmi, an advisor to the European Parliament. “We are aware that the Iranian intelligence is very dangerous for political dissidents in Europe and for peace and security in the West and the Middle East. They are also targeting people who support Iranian minorities who fight for justice and freedom. For this reason, we must be careful with Iranian intelligence. Look at how Iran is helping Russia against Ukraine. This thus acts against the interests of Europe and the world.”

“As the demonstrations in Iran escalate, Tehran’s violence against ethnic minorities increases,” Chiman O Salah, a local Iranian Kurdish dissident, stressed. “Because without the minorities such as the Kurds, Azeris, Turkmen, etc., the Iranian state will cease to be a state. If the international community does not act, thousands of people could be executed.”
Dr. Reza Parchizadeh, an Iranian political theorist and security analyst, believes that “The regime’s desperation has reached such a degree that it openly breaches the sovereignty of its neighbor Iraq. On the global stage, the mass demonstrations of the Iranian people against the Islamic Republic have strongly undermined the regime’s position vis-à-vis the West in the controversial nuclear talks. Therefore, the regime may rush for a nuclear arms race out of desperation.”
He asserted, “Washington must intervene to help the people of Iran to topple the Islamist regime and establish democracy because it is in the best interests of the US and her regional allies. If a pro-Western democracy comes to power in Iran, it will shut down the current regime’s global terror campaign, cause Russia and China to cease cooperating against the West, and make it easier to make peace between Israel and the Arabs, thus finally stabilizing a perennially unstable Middle East.”
Therefore, instead of going after a peaceful country like Azerbaijan, France should be devoting all of its efforts to going after the Islamic Republic of Iran. The world must stand united against the mullahs in Tehran and strengthen Azerbaijan and other countries who are standing on the frontlines against this horrible regime, not weaken them. Thus, this recent French resolution highlights how much the Armenian Diaspora is out of touch with France’s national interests.
