Miri Eisin – a retired colonel of the Israel Defense Forces with a background in military intelligence, gave us a security tour where she delivered detailed information about the strategic importance of the Golan Heights. The participants are a group of scholars from the security and diplomacy program at Tel Aviv University.
Let me begin with the mesmerizing view of the Golan Heights. It is a land of beauty, home to some of Israel’s most spectacular landscapes. While the bus was moving, the scholars took photos of vineyards, trees and flowers.
As a geopolitical region, the Golan Heights plays a crucial role in the life of Israelis. Before 1967, the Syrian military regularly shelled Israeli cities and villages from the Syrian controlled Golan Heights, which led to the death of innocent Israeli citizens. This intolerable situation put the people of northern Israel in constant danger.
The high ground of the Golan overlooking northern Israel gave Syria the upper hand. While visiting the Tel Faher (Golani Lookout), I felt the intense battle between the IDF and Syrians which ended with the victory of the Golani Brigade. This strategic plateau was captured by Israel in 1967 during the Six-Day war. Tel Faher is now a memorial park for those who died in the battle. The conquest of this hill requires heroism and passion.
I had the same feelings when I visited the cultural capital of Azerbaijan – the city of Shusha. Heroic, victorious Azerbaijani Special Forces climbed the rocks and liberated the city of Shusha from Armenian occupation.
Furthermore, we went to the Valley of Tears, a site where the main battle took place between the Syrian army and the IDF during the Yom Kippur war. Syria tried to take the Heights back in 1973 but failed.
In my point of view, there are several reasons why this region is strategic for Israel.
Firstly, due to the instability in Syria, Israel demonstrates the need to keep the Golan as the buffer zone between Israeli villages and Syria.
Secondly, there is a potential threat from Iran, because Iran is in Syria to stay and they launch attacks towards Israel.

One thing that touched my heart are the land mines planted by Syrians until 1967. Israel still suffers from landmines and is busy with the demining process. It could use mined lands for agriculture but because of mine danger that is not possible for now.
I specifically refer to this issue because Azerbaijan – a close ally of Israel also suffers from land mines. Throughout the years of occupation Armenia committed war crimes against Azerbaijan. My home country is focused on rebuilding these territories. However, thousands of mines impede the restoration of Karabakh. As an Azerbaijani student studying in the Holy Land, I’m proud that Israeli companies take an active part in the reconstruction of the Karabakh region.
In conclusion, I would like to express my gratitude to the program coordinator Roneet Weingarten, program director Anat Levy and Miri Eisin for creating great opportunities to learn and understand the Middle East region both theoretically and practically.
