To hell with the truth!
If the current state of affairs with the CBC and that segment of the media that slanders Israel in a variety of ways is not bad enough, on May 14, 2021 after the end of the Hamas –Gaza war, some 1539 persons signed and published a letter, whose author(s) remain unknown, titled An open letter to Canadian newsrooms on covering Israel-Palestine.
The key objects of the letter are:
a) to denounce Canadian news coverage as being skewed towards Israel, and
b) to demand that all the tenets of journalism should apply to Canadian coverage of “Occupied Palestinian Territories”, presumably excluding Gaza which is not under Israeli occupation.
The writer translates the second object as reporting that should be unbiased while also having a pro-Palestinian slant. So much for journalistic reasoning of the signatories.
The letter is signed, among others, by the Chair of Journalism, Diversity and Inclusion Studies, Carleton University; a faculty member; two of its graduates and a student; the Head of the Metropolitan University (formerly Ryerson) School of Journalism and two members of its faculty; a lecturer at Concordia University School of Journalism and the Director and the Researcher of the Coalition for Women in Journalism.
The writer dreads the quality of journalism taught at these four schools.
And that is not all. see: Sheridan College [Journalism] Instructor Doubles as Anti-Israel Columnist for Al-Jazeera [the Qatar- based news service]. In recent columns, he has accused Israel, of assassinating the Palestinian Journalist, of purposefully murdering Palestinians and even compared Israeli soldiers to members of the mafia and engaged in Jew hatred by dehumanising the Jewish people of Israel collectively, Honest Reporting Canada, HRC Alert, July 6, 2022
Such defamatory writings by a teacher or journalism instructor offer journalism students the very kind of role model which breaches the professional standards of journalism.
Hence, one cannot be surprised by the poor quality news reports about the Gaza war where the reporters failed to ascertain the material facts; use their personal views as facts, or see the facts as they would like them to be.
This dread is substantiated by the “so-called” facts set out in the letter which are stained precisely by the very shortcomings of the current reporting of the news concerning Israel, the Palestinian Authority, and Hamas.
Finally, the letter is also signed by quite a large number of persons who identified themselves simply as freelance journalists while some others did not identify their names or their profession.

2. The points made and illustrations provided by the signatories
These points made and the illustrations provided to make the points shows them to be singularly ignorant of the Code of ethics for journalists that invariably comprise the core principles: truthfulness, accuracy, objectivity, impartiality, balance, fairness and public accountability.
For example, the allegation that the occupation of the so-called Occupied Palestinian territories is a grave breach of international law ignores the fact this allegation is not substantiated by historical facts and the international law save for the law concocted, among others, by the advocates of the two-state solution and more specifically the E.U. in order to provide the Palestinians with a land base for their two- state solution. The fact of the matter is that Palestinians have never had let alone exercise sovereignty over any of the alleged territories.
Again, the fact that Palestinians and some entities such as the anti-Israeli U.N and some human rights organizations known for their strong anti-Israeli bias, claim that the unspecified IDF “attacks” amount to “ethnic cleansing”, does not make it so.
As a matter of fact, assuming the letter is referring to Gazans in the context of the Gaza war; such evidence does not exist. The signatories obviously ignore the admissions of Hamas and the P.A. (supra.) concerning the exemplary manner in which Israel conducted its defence to reduce the number of civilian casualties to an absolute minimum and succeeded in doing so.
The incontrovertible fact of the matter is that, based, among other data, on P.A.’s and UNRWA’s own population statistics, the rate of the growth of the Palestinian population in Judea, Samaria and Gaza since 1967, makes a lie of the alleged ethnic cleansing.
“Hence, during the Gaza war, one cannot be surprised by the poor quality news reports where the reporters failed to ascertain the material facts; use their personal views as facts, or see the facts as they would like them to be.” (Image: quakerservice.ca)
3. The signatories employed by the CBC and the mainstream media
According to HRC , the signatories who identified their employers, and those whose employers are already known and are involved in the production, editing or reporting of news are distributed as follows: CBC:15; CTV:4 ;Toronto Star:15; Globe and Mail:3; CTV: 4 or 5 (not clear|); Global News:1; Chatelaine:1;Yahoo News Canada:3; iPolitics: 1 and McLean’s:1.
Clearly, the news people in question should not be allowed to produce, direct, write and report, on matters concerning the P.A./Hamas/PIJ-Israel conflict.
Upon the distribution of the letter, CBC stated that any of its journalists who signed the letter would not be allowed to cover the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. And to the best of my knowledge, just one journalist was removed from his position, although the CBC person who dealt with this case stated that the move was temporary until things cooled down.
By June 2022, true to form, CBC having considered that things had cooled down enough; first, reinstated the journalist to his former position, and second, in a reversal of policy, it suspended the original decision and allowed its journalists who signed the open letter to cover Israel related news stories.
In the meantime, as I pointed out in Part 14, since January 2022, HRC called on CBC to correct or retract two-dozen false reports on Israel and to be fair, the corporation did in a number of cases.

Let the truth prevail! Five constructive suggestions concerning the Jewish community and Israel
Beyond reminding and expecting, hope against hope, the CBC and the anti-Israeli media to report the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and its impact on the Jewish community, indeed any and every matter concerning Israel and the Jewish community, accurately in conformity with the code of ethics governing journalism, I recommend the following five initiatives:
Concerning the Jewish community
First, the CBC and the mainstream media start reporting that which it has not done to date; namely, reporting fully and regularly the hate crimes committed against the Jewish community, its members and institutions. Read also: Robert Walker, New Statistics Canada Report Shows Jump in Antisemitic Attacks: How the Media Can Help Fight Back, HRC, August 9, 2022
A recent American study established that when media reports heavily on hate crimes against minority communities, hate crimes against those communities reduce in frequency. Mike Wagenheim, Research Shows Link Between Media Coverage of Hate Crimes and Frequency of Attacks www.jewishpress.com March 11, 2022
One regrettable obstacle to the full realization of the second recommendation, is the Trudeau government’s financial inducement to the media not to report negative news about newcomers in accordance with the provisions of Objective 17 of the UN Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. (Global Compact)
Concerning Israel
Second, read and report regularly items from the monthly Israeli publication Very Good News From Israel- News of Israel’s Achievements and Heartwarming Stories from the Jewish State.
https://verygoodnewsisrael.blogspot.com
The readers of these news will be afforded the valuable opportunities
a) to learn about new Israeli medical achievements that might be of help to them in dealing with their medical problems, and
b) to have access to Israeli initiatives and accomplishments in education; science and technology; economy ; business and other subjects that may provide them with useful information and potential insights that may assist them in their plans and endeavours.
And hopefully, informed by “true” stories about the social, political, economic, ethnic and religious fabric of the country, the readers will decide to re-visit their prejudices based on erroneous and fabricated facts about the country and its peoples reported in the news.
Third, bring yourselves up to date on Hamas,Palestinian Islamic Jihad (“PIJ”) and Gazans; the P.A and the Palestinian Arabs under its jurisdiction, Fatah and PLO
Read the Middle- Eastern Arab/Palestinian press concerning Hamas reported in Part 5 see also: Baruch Yedid, Hamas elite leaves Gaza for greener pastures, infuriating poverty-stricken residents, World Israel News, July 27,2022; Sally Ibrahim, ‘We want to live’: Gazans revive popular online campaign against Hamas, July28,2022;Khaled Abu Toameh, Palestinians Commit Suicide as Their Leaders Live in Hotels and Villas ,Gatestone Institute August 3,2022;
Fourth, start reporting fully and properly about
a) the terrorist aggressions of the Palestinian Authority, Hamas, PIJ and Hezbollah on Israel;
b) the oppressive and highly corrupt regime of the P.A;
c) P.A’s steady rejection of fair and generous Israeli peace-offers on at least two occasions,
d) Israel’s constructive actions and accomplishments concerning the P.A, the Palestinians both in Judea Samaria and in Gaza, the Israeli Arabs and in the world at large.
Lastly: Ask yourselves why the P.A. which has a long-standing and currently running full time generously financially rewarded terrorism program is not classified as a terrorist organisation as are Hamas and PIJ.
With all these goals in the works, the news reporters and opinion writers for the CBC and that segment of the media that have been bad-mouthing Israel without regard to and respect for the facts, save for the incorrigible recidivists of which there are unfortunately many, may well be able to claim back their professional self-respect.
