In recent days, US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi visited Armenia and made accusatory remarks against Azerbaijan. Utilizing the language of Holocaust remembrance, she blamed Azerbaijan for the latest escalation of violence between Azerbaijan and Armenia, which left around 200 people dead on both sides.

She ignored the fact that the conflict started when Armenian Forces attacked Azerbaijanis in the direction of Dashkesen, Kelbajar and Lachin, which was a flagrant violation of international law and the Tripartite Agreement signed between Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan .

On top of that, she acted as if the Armenians did not place landmines in the area, which in itself is a war crime.

From November 2020 until September 2022, 242 persons were hit by mines, 40 of whom died and 202 others injured.  Indeed, landmines transformed Karabakh from being a vibrant garden to the Hiroshima of the Caucuses.   And leading up to the recent escalation, aside from engaging in armed attacks against Azerbaijani forces, Armenia planted even more mines in lands that are recognized as part of Azerbaijan according to four UN Security Council resolutions.

Now, Pelosi is utilizing Holocaust language in order to blame Azerbaijan for the latest violence.   For me as an Israeli, all of this had an uncanny resemblance to how the community of nations responded to the alleged “Jenin massacre” in 2002.

Dr. Yitzhak Ben Gad, who served as Israel Consul General to Miami and Chicago, proclaimed the following about Jenin: “When I speak about Jenin, we are talking about a city that is the center of terrorists. During the Second Intifada, Arafat was sending people to kill Israelis. People exploded in buses, coffee shops, etc. One of the greatest attacks was the Park Hotel Massacre, where the Palestinians committed a massacre at a Passover Seder. So, then Prime Minister Ariel Sharon ordered Operation Defensive Shield. The IDF went in and tried to kill these terrorists before they tried to kill us.”

However, after Israel went into Jenin, the BBC and far too many others bought into the Palestinian false claim that Israel committed a massacre in Jenin.

Similarly, Rabbi Zamir Isayev claimed that there is merit to the claim that Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi behaved towards Azerbaijan in recent days is exactly how the BBC treated Israel following the Siege of Jenin.  He added that the Armenian Diaspora planned the recent provocation just in order to sabotage American-Azerbaijani relations:

“From open sources, it can be traced that $75 million was transferred to Armenian lobbyists in Washington, DC through Ruben Vardanyan’s bank account.   50 million of that amount were designated as a one-time donation to the Democratic Party.  The remaining $25 million was allocated for security and other expenses during Pelosi’s 72 hour visit to Armenia.”

Rabbi Isayev added, “This is what prompted her remarks. There are congressional elections now. She needs Armenian voices. It is very sad that for the sake of winning elections, someone goes to Armenia to break down the peace negotiations. Her visit is very bad for the peace process between Armenia and Azerbaijan. The border incident is now in the past. After the fire stopped, normalcy could be returned, but then there was this. It sabotages the peace process.”

The biased position of the West, especially the United States, plays a significant role in the continuation of the conflict. Azerbaijani lands were under Armenian occupation for 30 years, and their cities were victims of Armenian vandalism, ecocide and other violations of international law. After the first invasions began in 1992, the UN Security Council adopted four resolutions condemning the Armenian occupation, but during these 30 years, Armenia failed to comply with these resolutions.  In 2020, the Second Karabakh War started because of tensions created by the Armenian Forces in the border regions of Azerbaijan.  During the 44-day war, Azerbaijan was able to liberate their lands.

However, even though Azerbaijan was merely enforcing four UN Security Council Resolutions, too many countries did not hesitate to show their biased attitudes. Officials of France, USA, and Canada openly supported Armenia, which is an occupying state, in order to win the elections in their country and get the support of the Armenian diaspora, at the request of the Armenian lobby. Unfortunately, this position was also manifested during the recent conflicts.

Nancy Pelosi’s visit is an indication of the unequivocally biased position of the United States. Such visits not only have a negative effect on the resolution of the conflict, but also lead to an increase in tension and intense clashes.

America forgets that Armenia is a strategic parent of Iran and Russia when displaying such biased attitudes. The fact that American officials have ignored the location of 3 Russian military bases in Gyumri and other cities of Armenia, as well as Armenia’s support for Russia in the Russia-Ukraine war, means that the intention of a state like the United States is to ensure the continuation of war rather than peace in the South Caucasus.
