I am now a man in my mid 80’s. I remember, as a pre-teen, in the early 1950’s, enjoying the summers at our cottage, with its natural well water, and rocky beach. From early Spring to late Autumn my family lived on a broad 3 1/2  mile widening of the St Lawrence River, called Lac Saint-Louis, about 20 miles south of Montreal.

It is a beautiful lake. You can watch the sunset in the evenings, watch the rain pelt across it on stormy days, and of course, swim in it and boat on it. Lake Saint-Louis, despite its peaceful beauty, is large enough to have sudden, violent large storms with choppy water and large white-capped waves. The wind and rain storms come up suddenly and violently.

Every year on the first days of spring, when the icy cold waters are fed by the northern rivers, and the sun glows warmly off the quiet inviting lake, the lake shows its dark and dangerous side. Our side of the lake was safe, as its older residence knew the secret of Lake Saint-Louis.

But across the lake in Pointe-Clair, where new residences were built beside inviting sailboat and canoeing clubs, every year an untrained new sailor would sail a sailboat or paddle a canoe onto beautiful Lake Saint-Louis and lose his life to its harsher and unexpected violence.

Lake Saint-Louis was unforgiving. The beautiful Lake almost caught me twice.

Once I took a rowboat out in early spring before it had been caulked after a long winter. I happily rowed out about a mile and then discovered cold water at my feet; the boat slowly filled with icy cold frigid water as I made my way to shore.

Another 15 minutes and the waters would have sunk the boat and the ice cold waters claimed me. My parents had almost lost their younger son to the waiting arms of Lake Saint-Louis.

Another time in mid-summer I did an underwater turnaround, lost my sense of direction and started swimming towards the long weeds at the dark bottom of the lake. Luckily I realized my mistake in time, turned around and swam towards the light. I made it to air just in time. The lake had almost claimed me again.

We Canadian Jews live in a woke world where feelings count, but facts and history are ignored.

It is a world that discounts the value of religious belief and morals; a world of visualizing surface beauty. If we ignore the reality of the dangers of antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiment, we ignore the undercurrents of our own beautiful Lake Saint-Louis that silently wait for us; the Lake Saint-Louis whose siren calls will lead us to disaster.

We need to recognize our own Lake Saint-Louises, appreciate their beauty and at the same time recognize their potential destructive powers.  Our world gives us much information, but omits all kinds of facts and consequences – information that will keep us alive and well.

We each have our personal and global Lake Saint-Louis, waiting for us to tempt our fates.

I hope we are wise enough to understand the nature of our Lake Saint-Louises and to prepare ourselves to conquer and enjoy them, not to be overpowered by raging religious, social and political theories and forces that seduce us into our comfort zones, but whose destructive power we neither recognize nor understand.

Jonathan Usher was born in Montreal. He graduated from Queen’s Law School in 1963 and moved to Toronto where he has lived since. In the past 20 years of retirement he has become a very prolific and published letter-to-the-editor writer and conservative, social iconoclast.

Thank you for choosing TheJ.Ca as your source for Canadian Jewish News.

We do news differently!

Our positioning as a Zionist News Media platform sets us apart from the rest. While other Canadian Jewish media are advocating increasingly biased progressive political and social agendas, TheJ.Ca is providing more and more readers with a welcome alternative and an ideological home.

We revealed the incursion of anti-Israel progressive elements such as IfNotNow into our communities. We have exposed the distorted hateful agenda of the “progressive” left political radicals who brought Linda Sarsour to our cities, and we were first to report on many disturbing incidents of Nazi-based hate towards Jews across Canada.

But we can’t do it alone. We need your HELP!

Our ability to thrive and grow in 2020 and beyond depends on the generosity of committed readers and supporters like you.
