Recently, Israeli Opposition Leader Benjamin Netanyahu blamed Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett for every COVID-19 death since he took office in a recent Knesset plenum: “When Bennett became prime minister, almost no one was dying of the coronavirus. Bennett’s hesitation had cost the lives of 1,392 COVID-19 victims since he became prime minister. Most of those lives could have been saved if you did not waste precious time.”

He claimed that the Likud was the only reason why there was not a lockdown over the High Holidays, as he personally intervened to get Israel enough vaccines in time.

“After the corona was almost gone in Israel, suddenly, we got corona all over the country,” Ayoob Kara, who served as Israel’s Communication, Cyber and Satellite Minister, stated.  “This is because they did not maintain the right results.”

Kara insists the new government “made a mistake when they temporarily removed the green passport system and also by not moving quickly enough with the booster vaccine. It took them time. This made the situation bad. Now, we have to find a solution to live beside the disease.  I think there is no way we can go back to the right results that we had under Netanyahu.”

Nevertheless, even though Kara does not think the coronavirus is going to go anywhere, he does not think this will affect the struggle against the radical Islam and noted that the State of Israel will continue fighting against the extremism utilizing the same methods. He also emphasized that the circle of extremism will shrink due to the need for technologies to fight against the coronavirus.

According to Kara, Israeli know-how related to the coronavirus did assist the Abraham Accords: “The countries in the region got two enemies: corona and Iran. The State of Israel is no longer an enemy. This means that the State of Israel has the best situation since the War of Independence, as the Arab countries know that Israel can help them with the coronavirus. All of the cities in the world are now equal. Everyone falls victim to it, whether they are Muslim or not. As a result, the Muslim countries need different technologies from Israel to fight the coronavirus.”

In his view, together with the Iranian threat, the coronavirus greatly assisted Israel with making peace with Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Bhutan and Sudan. Prior to the election of Bennett and Biden, Kara noted that Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman and Mauritania were also about to make peace with Israel and if this had materialized, the coronavirus would have contributed towards those peace deals as well.

Nevertheless, Kara warned that while the coronavirus strengthened the potential for peace between Israel and the Arab world, it also strengthened the radical Islamist threat: “The coronavirus made the citizens across the world poorer. This means that they do not have food nor anything to fight the corona with. Some could translate this into believing that they got nothing to lose.”

In the end, this would create the background that would lead to Operation Guardian of the Walls, which led not only to Israel getting attacked by Hamas in Gaza like in the past but also massive rioting by Israeli Arabs in Jerusalem and other mixed cities.

A Palestinian source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, stated that the uprising began as a protest movement against the Palestinian Authority, who repelled the development of democracy by canceling elections. It is also true that the Palestinian public was also greatly disturbed with how the Palestinian Authority mismanaged the coronavirus. However, these protests were hijacked and transformed into an anti-Israel uprising.

Unfortunately for Israel, the economic conditions that led to the Israeli Arabs joining in fighting with the Palestinians during Operation Guardian of the Walls show no sign of abetting, as the coronavirus shows no sign of going away. As a result, those who support the extremism, namely Iran and its proxies in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Gaza and the Palestinian Authority, will become further emboldened to attack, as they are more desperate.
