School Supplies for Kids helps families in need
Na’amat Canada Calgary volunteers gathered on Sunday, August 29 to prepare backpacks with essential school supplies for 750 school-aged children living in Calgary and southern Alberta domestic violence and homeless shelters.
The annual School Supplies for Kids project aims to equip youth living in domestic violence and homeless shelters with the tools they need to succeed in school, and to help strengthen their self-esteem. Since School Supplies for Kids inception in 1998, this Na’amat Canada Calgary’s community service project has provided more than 23,000 children with backpacks filled with school supplies.
Jan Reimer of the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters comments, “since the start of the pandemic women’s experiences of violence have been increasing in severity. The Danger Assessment scores held firm at the all-time high set by emergency shelters last year, and the second stage shelter scores are higher this year than ever before.”
“Our recent School Supplies for Kids online art auction proceeds along with the support of donors and many sponsors will be matched by up to 50% by Shaw Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink. Our project could not have proceeded without this support,” says Stephanie Sacks, School Supplies for Kids Chair.
“It is heartwarming to see how our members and volunteers remain committed to providing the needed backpacks despite the challenges of working together during the time of COVID-19,” notes Linda Gutman, School Supplies for Kids Volunteer Coordinator.
Established in 1925, Na’amat Canada is part of an international Jewish women’s non-profit organization that is dedicated to enhancing the lives of women and children in Canada and in Israel.

“The Future of Canadian Comedy” on tour this week
Jewish comedian Jacob Balshin is barnstorming to the finish of the JNT Comedy Tour through 19 communities in Alberta and British Columbia this coming week.
Balshin is a popular comedian and podcast host, named Toronto’s Best Upcoming Comedian at the I Heart Jokes Awards in 2018, and was nominated for Breakout Comic Of The Year in 2020. The JNT Comedy Tour also features Andrew Packer and Che Durena.
Balshin, whose comedy has been featured on SiriusXM, CBC’s LOL, and has over 350,000 views on YouTube, told TheJ.ca that hitting the road, “has been a nice relief from a year and a half of being trapped in my apartment. I missed touring with my close friends, and making people laugh. I will visit every small city, town, village, county, until I find the man who stole my foreskin.”

Balshin continued, “I feel very molded by the Jewish experience. I don’t live the traditional life that a Jewish parent might want their kid to live – but I am incredibly happy. And I hope any parents reading this encourage their kids to explore their artistic side as much as their academic side.”
“Academically I never thrived, but I was working just as hard to distract the kids in my class with my jokes as they were at becoming doctors or lawyers,” he explained. “And I guess making their marks worse paid off into a career. I feel blessed to get paid to travel the country and make people smile.”
This week, the trio will be delivering a dynamic evening of comedy, spotlighting the complimentary styles and unique perspectives they have, at the following venues:
September 2 – Creston, BC at Creston Golf Club
September 3 – Crawford Bay, BC at Newkey’s Pub and RV Park
September 4 at 8:30pm – Cranbrook, BC at Mission Hills Gold Course
September 5 at 7:30pm – Camrose, Alberta at Camrose Resort Casino

Our positioning as a Zionist News Media platform sets us apart from the rest. While other Canadian Jewish media are advocating increasingly biased progressive political and social agendas, TheJ.Ca is providing more and more readers with a welcome alternative and an ideological home.
We revealed the incursion of anti-Israel progressive elements such as IfNotNow into our communities. We have exposed the distorted hateful agenda of the “progressive” left political radicals who brought Linda Sarsour to our cities, and we were first to report on many disturbing incidents of Nazi-based hate towards Jews across Canada.
But we can’t do it alone. We need your HELP!
