Ben & Jerry’s decided that they would no longer sell their ice-cream in Judea and Samaria, even though this decision will harm the livelihood of 10 Palestinian workers, who benefit from working conditions and wages that they could not get elsewhere in the Palestinian Authority.

Meanwhile, while Ben & Jerry’s is set to close down their operations over the green line, they have meanwhile refrained from boycotting Bangladesh, Iran and other totalitarian states. The question remains, why the double standard?

As we speak, Iran is repressing the Al Ahwaz nation, who used to have autonomy until their lands were annexed by Iran in 1925. They are forbidden from speaking their own language, dressing in their traditional dress and face other forms of systematic discrimination, which far exceeds anything the Palestinians have claimed to experience.

Manel Msalmi, an advisor for the European Parliament, stated in an exclusive interview:

“Demonstrations erupted in recent days due to the transfer of Al Ahwaz water to other regions in Iran. The Iranian regime has been drying up the rivers and marshes and killing fish and animals to pressure the Al Ahwaz people to emigrate. These demonstrations will continue until the water reaches the rivers and marshes. The Al Ahwaz people will not accept Iranian occupation. Until this moment, many youths have been killed, hundreds were injured and many others were arrested, but the uprising continues.”

However, Ben & Jerry’s has been silent about Iran’s repression of the Al Ahwaz nation.

Another country which oppresses minorities is Bangladesh. Shipan Kumer Basu, who heads the World Hindu Struggle Committee, emphasized in a recent interview: “The abduction, forceful conversion, compulsory marriage and systematic rape of non-Muslim girls has been especially rampant during the corona period.

In one such instance, a Muslim man married a Buddhist girl in Chittagong district in Bangladesh. However, after she gave birth to a girl, he abandoned her. According to Basu, “the converted girl is now making a living by begging with her baby girl. In this way, jihadists convert non-Muslims and gradually diminish their presence in the country.”

According to Basu, other girls were less fortunate. A Hindu girl who turned down conversion and marriage to a Muslim was beaten and seriously injured. In 2004, under BNP rule, a 10-year-old Hindu girl was gang raped by boys who were part of the BNP and Jamaat e-Islam. They were never tried for what they did.

The Sheikh Hasina government systematically persecutes Hindus and other minorities within the country. Today, Sheikh Hasina’s brother disrespected Hindu beliefs by killing a cow in a police station and hanging it outside a Hindu temple. According to Basu, “Sheikh Hasina is torturing and engaging in the ethnic cleansing of minorities in Bangladesh.”

However, Ben & Jerry’s is completely silent regarding Bangladesh’s repression of non-Muslim minorities.

Aside from the mullah’s in Tehran, the Taliban is one of the most repressive groups on earth. They destroyed the Buddhist statues of Bamiyan and were highly supportive of Osama Bin Ladin, the Al Qaeda terror leader who was responsible for the September 11 terror attack. They are also highly repressive towards women, forcing them to wear a primitive burqa that even covers their eyes, barring them the right to study and work and stoning them to death for not following their whims.

Pakistani lawmaker Mohsin Dawar told DW: “The Taliban continues to roam freely in different parts of Pakistan. This would not be possible without the state’s support.”

In light of this, why has Ben & Jerry’s not boycotted Pakistan?

Considering that Ben & Jerry’s are only singling out Israel, the only democratic state in the Middle East, and is not going after any other nation – including among the most repressive in the world – one must ponder whether antisemitism stands behinds Ben & Jerry’s latest decision that harms Palestinian workers by not selling their products over the green line.
