Imminent return of Pollard to Israel “will be a great moment for all of us”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke on the telephone with Jonathan Pollard and his wife Esther in anticipation of the freed spy and his wife making Aliyah. The U.S. Justice Department ended Pollard’s parole terms last week, allowing the former Navy intelligence analyst to fulfill their dream to return to the Jewish homeland. Pollard was convicted of selling military secrets to Israel while stationed at the Pentagon and served thirty harsh years of imprisonment, after which the Obama-Biden administration refused to vary his parole to allow the Pollards to emigrate.
“Hello, Yonatan, it’s very good to hear your voice… so when are we going to see you here? We’re waiting for you,” said Netanyahu. “You should now have a comfortable life where both of you can pursue your interests and we can take care of Esther with the best medical treatment in the world (referring to her ongoing cancer treatments).”
When the phone was passed to her, Netanyahu greeted her warmly. “What a wonderful day. We are waiting for your arrival even during the times of Corona with open arms and you will receive a true and real embrace of an entire nation. I really want to congratulate you that your nightmare is now over and that you can now return home to Israel. This will be a great moment for us all.”
Many thousands of hours of advocacy for Pollard was undertaken by leading lawyers, lobbyists and Zionists, as he became the first person given a life sentence for spying for an ally. His conviction and incarceration was a point of diplomatic and political tension between the U.S. and Israel for decades. While Vice-President in 2011, Joe Biden was quoted by the New York Times as saying “Over my dead body are we going to let him out before his time, if it were up to me, he would stay in jail for life.”
Biden trying to straddle Israel-Palestinian line
While Democrat nominee Joe Biden continues to construct a cabinet in anticipation of a formal victory when the Electoral College convenes, he is carefully navigating the demands and expectations of factions within this party – with Israel a constant flashpoint. His nominee for Secretary of State provoked a pre-emptive outburst from a fellow Democrat who is an avowed Israel-hater in Congress.
Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) tweeted that Biden’s nominee for Secretary of State Antony Blinken might be acceptable, “So long as he doesn’t suppress my First Amendment right to speak out against Netanyahu’s racist and inhumane policies.” Tlaib was replying in a quote tweet to Faiz Shakur, Senator Bernie Sanders presidential campaign manager who had called Blinken “a solid choice.”
“The Palestinian people deserve equality and justice,” Tlaib continued, already irked by the moves of the present Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to declare the BDS movement antisemitic after calling it a “cancer”.
On November 23, Squad member Tlaib again mentioned Blinken, who hails from a highly respected Jewish family connected to two former Democrat presidents:
“[Secretary of State Mike] Pompeo has moved to suppress BDS [Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions], a peaceful protest movement protected by the 1st Amendment. I hope that Mr. Blinken and President-Elect Biden’s Administration will change course from [President Donald] Trump’s State Department & not target or suppress support of Palestinian human rights.”
Dov Hikind, head of Americans Against Antisemitism watchdog, immediately blasted Tlaib: “Biden names a Jew to his cabinet. What’s Rashida’s response?! ‘Welp, as long as that Judische pick doesn’t stop me from focusing my hatred on one country, Israel, then he’s a good Jew!’ It’s not your 1A right you’re trying to protect but your vile Jew-hatred!”

Dr. Mike Harris, who founded San Francisco Voice for Israel (now a chapter of Stands With Us) also tweeted to Tlaib, pointedly stating “And as long as your interpretation of ‘justice’ for the Palestinians requires the elimination of Jewish statehood, then it’s not Blinken or Biden standing in the way of peace. Rather, it’s the Palestinian leadership and its enablers in the West.”
Another Biden appointment, Reema Dodin, gave a speech in 2002 in which she defended Palestinian targeting of civilians in Israel. “The suicide bombers were the last resort of a desperate people,” she said to a church in Lodi, California while she was a student at Berkeley. She is the daughter of Palestinian-Americans. Biden has placed her as a deputy director of the White House Office of Legislative Affairs.
Pompeo: Isolation of Iran was key to opening path for Abraham Accords between Israel and UAE & Bahrain
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told a Fox News interviewer that he expects more normalization announcements between Israel and Muslim countries, whether before or after Donald Trump leaves the White House.
“Everybody who joined the Abraham Accords will see the benefits for their own people so I am highly confident that many many more nations will ultimately choose to do the right thing and recognize Israel as the rightful homeland of the Jewish people,” he told Bret Baier on Tuesday after his return from the region. “We took away the excuse of the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, we took away the excuse that the United States was going to appease Iran, and so in the end, there were good sovereign decisions by those leaders. Those countries are more safe, more secure, they’ll be more prosperous.”
Pompeo declined to confirm reports of secret discussions in Saudi Arabia involving Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman (“I’ll leave to them to discuss the meetings that they may have had or may not have had”). He did explain the purpose of his visit, during which he announced that products exported from Judea and Samaria to the U.S. could be labeled as “Made in Israel.”

“What I was continuing to work on was creating space for the American people, security for the American people and reducing risk in the Middle East. I think each of them has come to understand that the work that we’ve done with the Abrahaic accords, the work that we’ve done to isolate the regime in the Islamic Republic of Iraq, has been good for their people, been good for the Middle East, I know it’s been good for the security people right here back at home.”
He was critical of comments made by Linda Thomas Greenfield, the Biden nominee to be Ambassador to the UN, that were negative about the Trump diplomatic approach. “Multilateralism for the sake of hanging out with your buddies at a cool cocktail party that’s not in the best interests in the United States. We develop coalitions that actually deliver real results and reflect the reality on the ground.”
In contrast to the way Barack Obama and Joe Biden handled conflict in the Middle East, Pompeo insisted that “appeasing terrorists, appeasing those who have hegemonic desires, appeasing those who are underwriting militias all throughout the region, destabilizing the Middle East cannot possibly be the right course of action. That would put them on the pathway to a nuclear weapon and we should never give Iran that chance.”
