While the Democrats continue to advance their claim of winning the White House, the outcome of the United States Presidential election remained in dispute at press time, as a number of states continued to be mired in slow vote tabulations and controversy over chain-of-custody and other ballot issues. While Joe Biden collected more votes (about 77 million) and news organizations have projected him as the winner, President Donald Trump (with about 72 million) refused to concede. Trump has called for recounts and filed lawsuits questioning the validity of the ballots counted, mostly from among the 100 million cast by mail all over the country.

After major media outlets declared that their prediction metrics set forth a path elevating former Vice-President Biden to the White House, accusations rang out of improper verification procedures, ineligible ballot inclusion, refusal to allow proper scrutineering, statistically improbable turnout estimates, counting-machine irregularities and numerous instances of dead people casting ballots. Attorney-General Bill Barr issued a memo to Department of Justice officials and the FBI director setting out guidelines for investigating “substantial allegations of voting and vote tabulation irregularities,” in which Barr noted, “Nothing here should be taken as any indication that the Department has concluded that voting irregularities have impacted the outcome of any election.” No state has yet certified their election results.

A major source of contention was the claims that key battleground states had suspended counting as Trump was ahead on election night, and were flooded with one-sided batches favoring Biden by morning. Among the states that Trump Republicans were disputing included Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada, Arizona and Georgia. Biden’s lead in four of those contests is between .25 to .8 percent.

The Secretary of State for the state of Georgia announced a hand recount, as Biden still led by approximately 14,000. Telling reporters “it’s really what makes the most sense with the national significance of this race and the closeness of this race,” Brad Raffensperger explained “this will help build confidence. It will be an audit, a recount and a recanvass all at once.”

Georgia is now the focus of the next stage of electioneering as the balance of power in the U.S. Senate rests with a January 5 run-off for the two seats allocated to the state. If the Democrats can capture both and pull into a 50-50 tie, then under a Biden administration, Kamala Harris as Vice-President would hold the tie-breaking vote.

As explained by fivethirtyeight.com, “Georgia has an unusual requirement that candidates must receive a majority of the vote to win an election, and if no one does so, the top two finishers advance to a runoff. We were expecting this to happen in Georgia’s special election for Senate, in which 20 candidates were on the ballot. (In that race, the top two vote-getters were Democrat Raphael Warnock, who has received 32.9 percent of the vote so far, and Republican Sen. Kelly Loeffler, who has received 25.9 percent.) But it also happened in Georgia’s regularly scheduled Senate election: Returns currently show Republican Sen. David Perdue at 49.7 percent of the vote and (Jewish) Democrat Jon Ossoff at 48.0 percent.” A Remington Research poll released November 11 gave both Republicans a marginal lead.

Reverend Warnock, the senior pastor of Ebenezer Baptist Church for 15 years, is a particularly controversial candidate as his May 2018 sermon critical of the IDF was recirculated by Loeffler. “We saw the government of Israel shoot down unarmed Palestinian sisters and brothers like birds of prey,” he said. He had also signed a statement with another pastor after a tour of the region that asserted, “The ever-present physical walls that wall in Palestinians is a political wall reminiscent of the Berlin Wall… The heavy militarization of the West Bank, reminiscent of the military occupation of Namibia by apartheid South Africa.”

Loeffler’s campaign citing her opponent’s support for the Black Lives Matter movement, which it called antisemitic, claiming “Warnock has a long history of anti-Israel statements and positions.” He has previously praised and defended the antisemitic Reverend Jeremiah Wright

In a Jewish Insider op-ed he submitted, Warnock stressed that he does not believe Israel to be an apartheid state. He stated he supported the $38B Obama security aid package to Israel and also accused the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement of antisemitism, but he expressed respect for “the First Amendment right to protest”.

In anticipation of an eventual declaration of a Biden-Harris administration, some commentators were focusing of possible foreign policy directions that could affect Israel and the Trump successes in brokering peace deals with Muslim nations and Israel.

Jonathan Tobin told a JNS Elections 2020 Webinar that Biden’s team is likely to be “surrounded by people who served under Obama and think Israel needs to be saved from itself.” Former Canadian Ambassador to Israel (1992-95) Norman Spector noted a Washington Post column, suggesting “If Israel is wise, they’ll pocket the gains from the Trump era and move Gantz into the PMO, thereby removing the Bibi bogeyman from Clinton/Obama peace processers who’ll be making a comeback.”

The influence of the past (Obama advisors) will be competing with the influence of the present from the far-left progressive elements that have squeezed moderate Democrat positions off the platform. As Democrat Congressman Tim Ryan of Ohio told the Washington Examiner, “Our brand is not good,” he said. “We have 70 million people who either hate us or are afraid of us or believe there is this vast spread of socialism in our party. It is why we lost so many seats in the House, or some seats were a lot closer than we wanted.”

While Biden has indicated he will not reverse the move of the US Embassy to Jerusalem, the Marxist anti-Israel elements, represented by the likes of Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar and the “Squad”, are lining up to cash in their markers for marshalling their troops to campaign and harvest ballots for the Biden-Harris ticket.

In contemplation of the possibility that an ailing Biden would be forced to forfeit his perch during his term, in columns in the Tennessee Star before the election Julia Strauss Levin assailed Kamala Harris as “radical in her positions and cagey in hiding them.”

She pointed out “how Harris attacked Biden for his civil rights record, offended by the segregationists whose company Biden kept, and calling out Biden’s objection to busing. Not an issue now that Harris is Biden’s running mate.  Will the real Kamala Harris please stand up.”

Among the clues Levin noted about the “real” Harris who may emerge even without taking over the helm from Biden, was her support of the Squad and stating Trump’s revocation of the Iran deal was a “huge misstep” and that she would rejoin it, a position shared with Biden.

In addition to her unbridled endorsement of the BLM movement with no acknowledgement of the antisemitic leaders who smear Jews as bigots and Israel as a white supremacist colonial project, Levin reminded readers that “Harris has a history from the time she was California’s attorney general of cuddling up to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR).”

“CAIR has been linked to extremist groups and even designated by the United Arab Emirates as a terrorist organization. CAIR has particular animus towards Israel. And yet, Harris offered her “gratitude and admiration” to CAIR in a 2018 personal letter she penned to the group.”

After the smoke clears and if the Biden-Harris election win is fully legitimized: Israel, the surrounding region, American politics, and American Jews, are in for some interesting and uncertain times
