A pro-Palestinian student group at McGill provided a newspaper commentary that has stirred accusations of antisemitism

On Canada Day the McGill Daily published a 1500 word antisemitic commentary titled It’s Beyond Time – and now critics have asked for equal space.
In a stern email to the Principal of McGill University, the Canadian Antisemitism Education Foundation called the item “a blatantly fallacious article about Israel and the Palestinian Arabs.” Executive Director Andria Spindel also told Suzanne Fortier and other officials that the “lies and omissions about the Jewish state … is contrary to Canada’s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, including its explanatory principles.”
The commentary, which ran 3 times the usual length of submissions to the student newspaper, was produced by Students in Solidarity with Palestinian Human Rights. In particular Spindel argued that their opinion piece refutes Fortier’s claim that there was no antisemitism at play on campus. “We feel compelled to ask that you speak out and hold the student paper accountable … The article, It’s Beyond Time, runs counter to the purpose of a university if one expects an honest search for truth.”
“(We hope) steps will be taken to ensure that students who are Zionist, whether Jewish or not Jewish, will not face intimidation, discrimination or unjust accusations about their beliefs and their aspirations for the Jewish state,” concluded Spindel, who provided Fortier and the Daily with an article in rebuttal.
In requesting they publish the counter-argument, she said it “debunks the lies and misinformation provided by SPHR, an Israel denying, antisemitic organization which does zero to help Palestinian Arabs.”
In support of her initiative, the Chair of the Department of Jewish Studies sent a response noting “that this newspaper has tendentiously published anti-Israeli materials in the past, and it was placed on probation for refusing to air information that contradicts that attitude.” Professor Yael Halevi-Wise thanked CAEF for “taking the time to prepare this rebuttal and to expand this conversation, so as to offer access to a broader range of information.”

Rabbi Chaim Greenwald welcomes the new principal, Caitlyn Cameron, to Calgary's Halpern Akiva Academy
New Principal Joins Calgary Hebrew school
The Halpern Akiva Academy in Calgary has a new principal at the helm. Mrs. Caitlyn Cameron is returning to Calgary after teaching for 7 years at Edmonton’s Menorah Academy. The school was established in 1980 by House of Jacob-Mikveh Israel, a beneficiary agency of The Calgary Jewish Community Federation, and bought the current school building in 2014. Halpern Akiva Academy offers an immersive “Ivrit b’Ivrit” Hebrew language program and students are expected to be fluent in Hebrew reading, writing, and speaking when they graduate.
Cameron has a bachelor of Education degree from the University of Alberta and recently added her Master in Educational Studies. Experienced teaching all core subjects for Grades 2-9, she “has a passion for incorporating hands-on, real world projects into her classroom.”
In a recent interview with Alberta Jewish News she addressed the pandemic impact on learning by reminding readers, “Everyone who is a part of our school community will need to pitch in to help keep our students, staff, parents and community members safe and healthy. By remaining flexible and addressing issues as they arise, we will be able to get through this together.” She also told the newspaper that with the move she will resume cheering for the NHL Flames, “beginning a family rivalry” with her Edmonton-born-and-raised OIler-loving husband.

Thank you for choosing TheJ.Ca as your source for Canadian Jewish News.
We do news differently!
Our positioning as a Zionist News Media platform sets us apart from the rest. While other Canadian Jewish media are advocating increasingly biased progressive political and social agendas, TheJ.Ca is providing more and more readers with a welcome alternative and an ideological home.
We revealed the incursion of anti-Israel progressive elements such as IfNotNow into our communities. We have exposed the distorted hateful agenda of the “progressive” left political radicals who brought Linda Sarsour to our cities, and we were first to report on many disturbing incidents of Nazi-based hate towards Jews across Canada.
But we can’t do it alone. We need your HELP!
Our ability to thrive and grow in 2020 and beyond depends on the generosity of committed readers and supporters like you.
