The United States is becoming less welcoming for its Jewish citizens, and for supporters of the state of Israel. I do not say this lightly, as I was fortunate to live and work in Venice Beach, California, at the turn of the century, and for me, it was the land of opportunity. Los Angeles was the first place where my being Jewish was actively considered a positive attribute by secular society (because if I was Jewish and Canadian, I must be funny, seemed to be the perception, which in the documentary business opened a few doors.)

However, in 2020 across the US, disturbing incidents of antisemitic harassment, hate and violence are reported at a staggering pace, especially in California. At the outset of the Black Lives Matter protests, on May 30 in Los Angeles, the Jewish community was assaulted by the “Shavuot Pogrom” as violent antisemites deliberately marched through the Fairfax district, looting and defacing Jewish stores, schools and five synagogues. “Kill the Jews” was scrawled. There was no national mainstream news coverage.

The public displays of hate are accelerating. Here are some recent incidents of antisemitism across the nation:

  • Last week in Los Angeles, a banner “The Jews Want a Race War” was draped over the 405 Freeway by GoyimTV.com. The main antagonist, Jon Eugene Minadeo II, is the son of Jon Minadeo, a convicted felon and known Jew-hater white supremacist.
  • Tikvah: Students for Israel, a pro-Israel student group at UC Berkeley, revealed that a member of Congress has called for an investigation into UC Berkeley’s Center for Middle East Studies (CMES). Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colorado) wrote to officials in June that “The Department of Education should investigate if Title VI [of the Civil Rights Act] are being utilized in conjunction with Saudi Arabia,” as well as citing 24 anti-Israel events hosted since 2016. On Facebook Tikvah commented, “This past semester Jewish Students were harassed and threatened with violence on multiple occasions in the ASUC [Associated Students of the University of California.] “It has become ok on our campus to put up photos of murderers and hold moments of silence for Islamic Jihad terrorists, whose stated goal is genocide against Jewish people. This is the result of the failure of leadership to deal with antisemitism and antizionism happening in the classroom.”

  • Democrat presidential nominee Joe Biden called for an investigation after the Chabad Centre for Jewish Life at the University of Delaware, his alma mater, was torched by arsonists, Aug. 25. “This news is deeply disturbing – as an alum of @UDelaware and as an American,” posted Biden on his Twitter account. “We need a full and swift investigation into what happened Tuesday night. With anti-Semitism [sic] on the rise across the country, we all have a moral obligation to speak out and give hate no safe harbour.” The rabbi, his wife and three children were displaced, and a GoFundMe campaign was started by students of Chabad on their behalf.
  • In the course of the rioting and violence in Kenosha, Wisconsin, an individual broke off from a BLM march to spray paint “Free Palestine” on the driveway of the Beth Hillel Temple, which is notable, as that congregation has been supportive of the social justice movement.
  • The historic Congregation Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia was horrified by two antisemitic statements and an undisclosed symbol on a sign outside the shul. The Anti-Defamation League also reported that the Kesher Israel Synagogue was spray painted with two swastikas, Aug. 10, and that hooligans had yelled abusive comments outside another area shul recently.
  • Nine high school students in Indiana are under investigation after being photographed lying on gym mats forming a swastika, with their arms raised in the Nazi salute. Daleville Community Schools released a statement on the school’s website Saturday, stating it “will not tolerate acts of racism, bias, unlawful harassment, or discrimination of any kind, and we are profoundly disappointed and shocked by the apparent actions of the students as depicted in the images we have seen posted on social media.”

  • A medical resident in Cleveland agreed to surrender her training certificate subsequent to her firing for vile antisemitic online posts. Lara Kollab was fired by the Cleveland Clinic in Dec. 2018, after they learned of her actions, which included a tweet that “ill (sic) purposely give all the yahood the wrong meds.” The State Medical Board of Ohio has permanently barred Kollab from practicing osteopathic medicine and surgery, or participating in another medical training program.
  • Journalist Ami Horowitz ventured right into ground zero of Jew-hatred in America, the Minneapolis district of Rep. Ilhan Omar, and videotaped man-on-the-street responses to the question, “are Jews responsible for Coronavirus.” It wasn’t pretty. He posted the video to Twitter, which can be found: here

  • Lastly, even progressive campus group J-Street has had enough of Omar’s fellow “Squad” member Rashida Tlaib, who represents a Detroit district in Congress. The far-left nominally Jewish lobby decided that, “we cannot endorse candidates who come to the conclusion that they can no longer publicly express unequivocal support for a two-state solution, and other core principles to which our organization is dedicated.” Tlaib had first declared she supported cutting US military aid to Israel, and the next day said, “This whole idea of a two-state solution, it doesn’t work.”
  • “After closely consulting with Rashida Tlaib’s campaign to clarify her most current views on various aspects of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, we have come to the unfortunate conclusion that a significant divergence in perspectives requires JStreetPAC to withdraw our endorsement of her candidacy,” read a statement from J Street, August 14.

Thank you for choosing TheJ.Ca as your source for Canadian Jewish News.

We do news differently!

Our positioning as a Zionist News Media platform sets us apart from the rest. While other Canadian Jewish media are advocating increasingly biased progressive political and social agendas, TheJ.Ca is providing more and more readers with a welcome alternative and an ideological home.

We revealed the incursion of anti-Israel progressive elements such as IfNotNow into our communities. We have exposed the distorted hateful agenda of the “progressive” left political radicals who brought Linda Sarsour to our cities, and we were first to report on many disturbing incidents of Nazi-based hate towards Jews across Canada.

But we can’t do it alone. We need your HELP!

Our ability to thrive and grow in 2020 and beyond depends on the generosity of committed readers and supporters like you.
