The highly charged political split in Alberta between right and left crossed a line on Twitter this week, according to representatives of the Jewish communities, when a labour leader compared government legislative tactics with Nazi Germany.
The Jewish Federation of Edmonton and Jewish Calgary each made public statements on July 13th after the biggest Union chief in the province, Gil McGowan, said on Twitter that “Hitler’s propaganda chief, Joseph Goebbels, famously said “always accuse your enemies of what you are doing yourself.” That’s exactly what’s going on with Jason Kenney’s union-busting Bill 32.”

Response from the community leadership was swift
“We are aware of recent comments on social media from @gilmcgowan, President of @ABFedLabour comparing the UCP to the Nazis”, the Jewish organizations jointly tweeted. “we have reached out directly to Gil McGowan’s office to discuss our concerns”
The president of the Alberta Federation of Labour compared Premier Kenney’s regime with Hitler’s Germany.
The two Federations represent about 13,000 Jewish people in Alberta’s two largest cities. CTV News reported that Steve Shafir, President of the Jewish Federation of Edmonton, further commented, “Comparing anything to the atrocities that the Nazis perpetrated, especially when it’s nowhere near the severity, not even in the same ballpark, is always concerning,” adding “some of these actions he’s comparing to as a lead up to a mass genocide, I think is wholly irresponsible.”
McGowan, in a response to Global News, insisted, “Many reasonable experts and observers agree that we’re witnessing a reemergence of the very kind of right-wing authoritarian governments that brought us the horrors of the Holocaust.”
In February, Gil McGowan called pro-oil and gas Alberta caravan-goers “racist, extremists, grifters, and bullies.”
This wasn’t the first time McGowan had described political foes as Nazis. In February, referring to a tense lockout at oil refineries, he tweeted, “The CEO of CoopFCL enlisted the thugs who call themselves “United We Roll” the same way the Hitler enlisted the thugs he called “brownshirts.” The Jewish leadership did not seemingly note his remarks at that time.
The United Conservative Party bill, focused largely on existing workplace safety and employment standards rules, will require unions to declare political and non-core spending and will ensure “union members are not forced to fund political activities and causes without explicit opt-in approval.”

Our positioning as a Zionist News Media platform sets us apart from the rest. While other Canadian Jewish media are advocating increasingly biased progressive political and social agendas, TheJ.Ca is providing more and more readers with a welcome alternative and an ideological home.
We revealed the incursion of anti-Israel progressive elements such as IfNotNow into our communities. We have exposed the distorted hateful agenda of the “progressive” left political radicals who brought Linda Sarsour to our cities, and we were first to report on many disturbing incidents of Nazi-based hate towards Jews across Canada.
But we can’t do it alone. We need your HELP!
