You can’t miss them.
Wherever they turn up they make sure they’re in the midst of the action, right where they can be seen.
I’m referring to self-loathing or self-hating Jews.
I prefer to call them useful idiots, for cozying up to those who’d love to see Israel disappear into the sea.
They’re rabbis in Hasidic garb, their payot conspicuous. Last year three of them turned up at the hateful Al Quds day rally on Toronto’s University Ave., standing front and centre as scores of speakers spewed their anti-Israel venom around them..
There’s Suzanne Weiss, who claims she’s a Holocaust survivor, and who is trotted out at a variety of anti-Israel press opportunities. Her latest appearance was at the virtual Al Quds rally on May 16, where she claimed Israel was a friend to COVID (insinuating that Israel is to blame for the virus).

They’re a motley group of Jews who claim to be interested in social justice called Independent Jewish Voices (IJV) who repeatedly deny that anti-Semitism is on the rise in Canada and worldwide. On April 27 IJV Canada issued a statement alleging there could be a severe outbreak of COVID-19 because of a blockade by Israel of the Hamas-controlled Gaza strip. There was no mention of a similar blockade by Egypt.
Fact is, there have been just two deaths to date from COVID in the Gaza Strip, compared to 279 in Israel proper. But let’s not let facts get mixed up with an anti-Israel agenda.
I still remember a filmmaker who was part of the Queers Against Israeli Apartheid (QuAIA) movement that hijacked the Toronto Pride parade from 2009 to 2014. The woman made a point of telling anyone who would listen that her grandmother was a Holocaust survivor, as if that gave her more street cred in her anti-Israel endeavors.
Who are these useful idiots? What is in their psyche to make them cozy up to the enemy?
They usually consider themselves “progressives”, almost always align with the political left, and appear to be highly uncomfortable with their Jewish roots, or have an intense desire to go along to get along.
During an interview two years ago, self-described liberal Zionist and former Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz told me that many of these self-hating Jews come from a tradition of speaking out against perceived injustices. They feel it is their mission, however misguided.
Look, I have no problem with criticism of Israeli policies. Yet what separates valid criticism from a pure hate of the Jewish state (and Jews) is the obsessive nature by which they dwell on the alleged human rights abuses of Israel, ignoring war crimes and crimes against humanity in Myanmar, Syria and Rwanda, to name just three countries.
But here’s where the useful idiot part comes in. Self-loathing Jews think they’re standing up for what’s right—advocating for social justice and the “poor Palestinians.”
As I’ve come to observe during years of covering anti-Semitic audits, events and rallies, they have foolishly allowed themselves to be used by those who care not a bit about the Palestinians, but purely and simply hate the Jewish state.
In recent years, the Israel haters – under heat from Jewish advocacy groups – have repeatedly tried to convince the world they don’t hate Judaism or Jews, they just hate Zionists. They constantly point to the self-loathing Jewish useful idiots who stand cheek by jowl with them, and allow themselves to be called a “brother” or “sister.”
I’ve watched this scenario unfold many times, in horror.
I’ve written about far too many anti-Semitic acts in recent years, and have watched major cities in Europe become unwelcoming to Jews.
I’ve been sued by a rabid Israel hater who repeatedly labelled me a “Zionist” at protests, and didn’t like me exposing her as an anti-Semite (she eventually dropped the lawsuit). I’ve been singled out at meetings as a member of the Jewish lobby, and have been the recipient of many toxic anti-Semitic e-mails.
Contrary to the contentions of the IJV, anti-Semitism is very real.
Self-loathing useful Jewish idiots do nothing but enable, and even fuel, its rise.
