I imagine you will all be reading this piece in the comfort of your home, quarantined in a way you never thought possible. Over the past few weeks, you’ve probably found yourself alone with a mind you’ve never fully explored, a soul you never knew you had, up against challenges and questions you have never dared address.

Perhaps until now, you have barred all the question and thoughts that matter; you fill your mind with work, you spend your years crawling along the exhausted path of money and recognition, beauty and influence, power and relevance, like billions of humans before you. And suddenly, it comes to a stop. A terrifying question looms over you: Who am I? What is my purpose? And so, you find yourself in the shoes of your ancestors four thousand years ago.

Like a colossal spiral staircase, G-d seems to bring us Jews round and round through the same challenges until the message sinks in. Our quarantine mirrors a grand quarantine that took place four thousand years ago. This weeks Torah Portion begins the fourth book of the Torah, where the newly liberated slave nation must travel through the Sinai desert alone with their slave wearied minds and numbed hearts.

After two hundred years of incessant work, the great desert exposes their vulnerabilities, and they begin to unravel. Freedom means time to think, freedom means facing our thoughts buried deep inside, freedom means making something of life, freedom means finding purpose, and they were unable to face any of those things.

The great nation comes undone. “If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt” they cry. “Let us appoint a leader and return to Egypt!” The people demand slavery.

They need the work, they ache for distraction; something about truth is unbearable.

So instead of a trip that might take four days, G-d will take them in circles for forty years, willing them to be free, begging them to choose freedom.

It is as if G-d’s pleas echo through the generations. You have a mission, your life has purpose. Find out why you’re here.

This is transformation, my friends; it might hurt, it might drive you crazy, it might put you in a depressive nap in bed, it may make you cry, kicking your feet and thrashing your arms. Every synapse in your body will rage against this free time of yours. You senses may rebel against this newfound freedom.

And yet, if you listen closely, you will hear a soft still voice; it is your thirsty soul reminding you that this is not new. Your living room is the great barren desert, G-d towers over you, leading you with a cloud by day and fire by night, demanding that you see life for what it is, and brazenly stare down the truth.

I’ll be here with you for some time, in the form of this column, and through the teachings of this great Torah of ours, I hope to electrify you. I want to take you by the hand and guide you through the rich history of our mighty nation.

I intend to take you to the subterranean depths of this three thousand year old inheritance of ours, and bring it to life. To reveal for you a living, breathing Judaism that ignites you, that enriches your life, and empowers you, the very fabric of The Thirsty Souls.

Thank you for choosing TheJ.Ca as your source for Canadian Jewish News.

We do news differently!

Our positioning as a Zionist News Media platform sets us apart from the rest. While other Canadian Jewish media are advocating increasingly biased progressive political and social agendas, TheJ.Ca is providing more and more readers with a welcome alternative and an ideological home.

We revealed the incursion of anti-Israel progressive elements such as IfNotNow into our communities. We have exposed the distorted hateful agenda of the “progressive” left political radicals who brought Linda Sarsour to our cities, and we were first to report on many disturbing incidents of Nazi-based hate towards Jews across Canada.

But we can’t do it alone. We need your HELP!

Our ability to thrive and grow in 2020 and beyond depends on the generosity of committed readers and supporters like you.

Monthly support is a great way to help us sustain our operations. We greatly appreciate any contributions you can make to support Jewish Journalism.

We thank you for your ongoing support.
