Dr. Leslyn Lewis

With the coronavirus pandemic turning retail politics to Zoom meetings, Dr. Leslyn Lewis is certainly making the rounds as she seeks to emerge from the back of the pack seeking to lead Canada’s Official Opposition.
Born in Jamaica, Lewis boasts some impressive degrees, including a PhD in law from Osgoode Hall Law School, and her work in the legal profession spans two decades in various fields, including cases related to immigration and environmental law. Lacking the same heavy name recognition of former Conservative cabinet ministers and MPs in the race (such as Erin O’Toole and Peter MacKay) Dr. Lewis is working tirelessly to get her name out by hosting many virtual townhalls with CPC party members.

On May 13, I caught her latest townhall forum, hosted by Chani Aryeh Bain. Bain was the Conservative Party’s candidate for Eglinton-Lawrence in the last federal election. I found Dr. Lewis to be an unequivocal ally of the Jewish community in the issues we are uniquely concerned about.
Her responses on the issue of antisemitism in Canada truly impressed me.
Dr. Lewis used the word ‘deplorable’ in describing antisemitism, calling it “an international issue” that is “growing at an increasing and alarming rate.” She used the word “deplorable” again in describing the particular challenge of fighting anti-Semitism and fear experienced by Jewish students on Canadian university campuses. She lamented the fact that “institutions of higher learning where free speech had always been encouraged was replaced by fear and intimidation towards Jewish students.”
On the issue of the Canadian embassy in Israel, she “would follow the example of the US and move our embassy to Jerusalem. Everyone said that when the US moved their embassy, it would be a political mess and there would be chaos. There wasn’t. That’s something I would do, is move the embassy.”
In the townhall, Dr. Lewis also touched upon issues like guns, the economy and taxes.
On the Trudeau gun ban, Dr. Lewis stated that a more effective approach would be the increase of border security, pointing to the fact that guns in crimes are mostly smuggled in from the United States.
On the economy, she pledged more help for those struggling, particularly the 167,000 who lost their jobs in Alberta.
She called the carbon tax: “a punitive tax on the poor that does nothing to help the environment.”
I found Dr. Lewis’ responses to many of the attendees’ questions to be both strongly principled. and candidly refreshing. As refreshing newcomer to politics with an impressive background, Dr. Lewis merits a solid look in the upcoming race. Members vote August 21, 2020 for a new leader.

We have exposed the distorted hateful agenda of the “progressive” left political radicals who brought Linda Sarsour to our cities, and we were first to report on many disturbing incidents of Nazi-based hate towards Jews across Canada.
