The First 7 Minutes Program was presented to 40 people who attended the Rady JCC to hear oif the crucial role a prepared civilian population can play, after they were told of statistics demonstrating that it takes an average of 7 minutes for emergency crews to get to the scene of an attack targeting the public. Often because of the chaos that transpires in the vicinity that average time will be far longer.
With the City of Winnipeg being repeatedly overwhelmed by existing demand for ambulance service, an attack on Jewish institutions here – similar to the Tree Of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh or the deranged shooters attacking innocents in Toronto – could result in absolute slaughter.
“The knowledge and expertise developed by Magen David Adom in dealing with chaotic tragedies in Israel forms the foundation for our program. Jewish communities in Canada must be prepared to take action if there is violence targeting our people and buildings”, said CMDA Western Regional Director Sharon Fraiman.
In her previous career she was an award-winning teacher, and the personable Fraiman was over the moon with the success of the evening. “I’m so proud to be part of CMDA team and the response to our presentation will lead to additional events in Winnipeg.”
Calgary paramedic Don Sharpe, who is a staunch ally of Israel and of Jews in Canada, set out an incident scenario, with people in attendance taking roles as victims and bystanders. His instruction about the immediate triage of injured and wounded with the use of a specially equipped kit made a deep impression on those taking the 2 hour course.
Among the participants in the exercise were human rights lawyer David Matas, pediatrician Dr. Michelle Feierstein, and the National Director Emeritus of Bridges For Peace, Pastor John Howson with his wife Ruth.
“It is so important – in this era of unpredictable and potentially catastrophic incidents – for private citizens to learn how to be prepared for the unthinkable, and be able to initiate life-saving procedures before first responders can get to a crime scene.” Sharpe stated.
Ron East of Shomrim Canada, who is the Publisher of TheJ.ca, called the event “amazing! I urge everyone in any community to attend this program and be prepared to assist in case of a Mass Casualty Event.”
